Elisabeth of Hungary
Holy Elisabeth of Hungary , Erzsébet in Hungarian (1207 - November 17th 1231) is the girl of André II of Hungary and Gertrude d' Andechs-Meran (assassinated in 1213). It was promised in marriage to 4 years and was married at 14 years with the Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringe. Thus, it is called also holy Elisabeth de Thuringe .
She lived of 1211 with 1228 with the Château of Wartbourg. German franciscain S make him discover the spirit of Saint François d' Assise and it then decides to put at the service the poor. Her husband dies in 1227. As she refuses to be remariée, its family hunting with her three children. His/her uncle, bishop, calm the family. The three children will be raised by the ducal family. Elisabeth revêt the dress of the Third-order Franciscain. From now on it devotes all its life and its money to the poor for which it makes build a hospital. She dies in 24 years.
She was Canonisé E in 1235 and its festival is the November 17th.
Life
One says that it secretly carried bread to the poor of Eisenach, to foot and only, which rejected her husband. One day, it met it on the way, and her husband, furious, asked him what it thus hid under its coat. She answered him that they was pink S, and not that it was Pain, and when her husband ordered to him to open his coat, he found only pinks there. It is the miracle of holy Elisabeth of Hungary.
Family
His/her father being the brother of Constancy, marries Ottokar Ier of Bohemia, Elisabeth is the German cousin of holy Agnès of Bohemia.
Iconography
It can be represented either as a princess, or in tertiary sector franciscaine. When it is represented as a princess, it carries a crown on the head and in the hands a book where two crowns are posed. Those can represent its royal birth, its austere piety and its abstinence, that is to say to include itself/understand like the three nodes of the cordelière franciscaine representing the wishes of Poverty, Chasteté and Obedience.
