Elisabeth de Mantoue (1471-1526)
Elisabeth de Gonzague (born towards 1471 in Mantoue, † 1526 with Ferrare), duchess of Urbin, made court of her husband, Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, one of the high places of the Rebirth.
Marriage
Elisabeth was the girl of Frederic de Gonzague, marquis of Mantoue, and Marguerite of Bavaria (1442-1479). She was the fifth sister of François II of Gonzague. She married in 1489 the duke of Urbin, Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, then widower of Lucrèce d' Aragon, but they could not see children.Elisabeth accompanied in 1501 the girl by the pope Lucrèce Borgia, who was to marry Alphonse Ier d' Este, with Ferrare. Elisabeth was the friend and the confidante of her sister-in-law, Isabelle d' Este (this one had married François II of Gonzague).
Escape of Urbin
When on June 21st, 1502 César Borgia seized Urbin, putting in Guidobaldo escape, Elisabeth was with Mantoue where it remained as an hostage until on the initiative of the pope the situation is restored. She could return in Urbin in 1503.Become widowed in 1508, it could however remain in Urbin, because his/her niece Éléonore de Mantoue (1493-1550) was the woman of the new duke, François Marie Ier della Rovere.
But in June 1516 it had to leave Urbin again, driven out by the pope Leon X which wanted to transmit the duchy to its nephew Laurent de Médicis. Ruined, his/her Éléonore niece and it were withdrawn in the family stronghold of Ferrare.
