Elisabeth de Goerlitz
Elisabeth of Luxembourg or Elisabeth of Luxembourg or Elisabeth de Goerlitz , born in Horsewitz in December 1390, died with Trier the August 3rd 1451, was duchess engagère of Luxembourg of 1411 with 1443. She was girl of Jean of Luxembourg, duke of Goerlitz and Catherine (or Richardis) of Mecklenbourg-Schwerin.
The July 16th 1409, it married Antoine of Burgundy (1384 † 1415), duke of the Brabant and Limbourg. Not being able to pay his dowry, his/her uncle the emperor Sigismond was mortaged to him the duchy of Luxembourg in 1411. It took possession with her husband of it, but this one was killed shortly after with the Bataille of Azincourt.
It remaria in 1418 with Jean III of Wittelsbach (1376 † 1425), duke of Bavaria Straubing, but was again quickly widowed.
Carrying out large train and sifted debts, it sold in 1443 Luxembourg with Philippe III the Good, duke of Burgundy, one of the nephews of its first husband. This sale was however badly accepted by the Luxembourgers who reproached him for having sold the duchy to a foreign prince, and it was withdrawn with Trier.
