Elisabeth Vonarburg

Elisabeth Vonarburg is a writer E of Science-fiction born with Paris in 1947 which lives with the Saguenay, Quebec since 1973. She is also known under the pseudonym " Sabine Verreault".

Biography

In France

She lived in periphery of Paris, first of all with Blanc-Mesnil, then with Sergines from seven to eighteen years. She successively discovered during these years the reading, poetry then the science fiction. Its studies initially were carried out with the Traditional Lycée Young girls with Sens (Yonne) in (France), then with the Université of Dijon in literature and social sciences. It will obtain successively in this institution of 1969 to 1969 a certificate in comparative literatures, a diploma in modern literature, a certificate in theory of literary criticism as well as a control in modern literature. Its thesis of control, treating evolution of traditional literary topics in science fiction and fantastic, was one of the first on the subject in France.

In order to become teaching, it will pass the examination of the Vocational training certificate to Secondary education (CAPES) then will obtain an Aggregation in modern literature in 1972. Until 1973, it will be teaching with the college of Trawl-net-On-Sâone, where it notes that it cannot easily carry out face of the careers in literature and in teaching.

With the Quebec

In 1973, her husband Jean-Joel Vonarburg is transferred to Chicoutimi (now district of the town of Saguenay) within the framework from an international exchange cash for the military service. It accompanies it and becomes auteure-compositrice-interprets for the radio and television (1973-1982) and technical translator at Alcan (1976-1977).

She will undertake there post-doctoral studies on the topic of the reproduction in the female science fiction in 1988-1990.

Beginnings in science fiction

In parallel, since 1974, it is implied in the medium incipient from the Québécois science fiction by writing criticisms and tests for the magazine Solaris, then named Requiem . Its first news of the kind published, High tide , appears to with it besides in 1978. In 1979, its implication becomes increasingly important: from 1979 to 1990, it is literary director of the review of Solaris science fiction; it will cumulate there the function of editor association of 1983 to 1986. She organizes the first Québécois convention on the science fiction, BOREAL, at the University of Quebec with Chicoutimi this same year, then will repeat in 1982,1988 and 1999. She also takes her first steps in the translation of anglophone works of science fiction and from fantastic, with fall It from birth of Tanith Lee. Many others will follow in the years 1980,1990 and 2000.

Its first science-fiction novel, the silence of the city , appears in 1981 at Denoël in the collection Présence of the future. It is a success: it gains in 1982 for this novel the Grand Prix of the French SF, the Boreal Prix and the Prix Rosny elder. It will publish a first collection of news, the Eye of the night in Quebec in 1980 then Janus in France, still at Denoël, in 1984. Recognized for its writing and its implication in the medium, it animates workshops of writing in science fiction and fantastic, and is invited on television and to the radio in order to animate emissions or chronicles on the subject, first of all in 1976 and 1977 in Radio-Canada, then in 1985 and 1986 at the radio station SHOCK FM and obtains a weekly chronicle with the radio of Radio-Canada of 1993 to 1995, entitled Demain the day before . It also publishes in 1986 one entitled book How to write stories - Guide of the explorer , three times republished and always considered in 2006, is twenty years later, like a reference in the field and suggested as delivers reference in university courses of literary creation (Université Laval).

The Great lady of the Québécois science fiction

In 1990, it decides to be devoted entirely to the writing, and gives up its post-doctoral studies. As from this moment, it will publish many news, novels and collections. In 1992, it publishes the novel Chroniques country of the mothers , whose english language version will gain the special price Philip K. Dick Memorial Award in 1994, in addition to the Grand Prix of the science fiction and the fantastic Québécois, the Prix Aurora and the Boreal Prix. Since, the majority of its novels and number of its news are published in French then translated into English, a first for a Québécois writer of science fiction. In 1994, to the novel the travellers in spite of them appears, translated under the title Reluctant voyagers . Then it develops in five volumes for adults and a collection of news for young sound Cycle of Tyranaël in 1995 and 1996; it explores there the colonization of a strange planet by the human ones, monumental work of more than 2000 pages. One owes him also the French translation of the Tapisserie of Fionavar of Guy Gavriel Kay of which it translated several other works later on. In 2005, appears the House of Lapse of memory (700 pages…), the first volume of a new novel, Queen of Memory , a family saga located in France in a parallel universe where reign magic. Four following parts: the Dragon of fire , the insane Dragon , the Princess of Revenge and the House on Equity appear in 2005,2006 and 2007.

One of its editors, the Éditions Alire crowns it great lady of the Québécois science fiction , by comparison with American écrivaines like Andre Norton, Anne McCaffrey or Ursula Guin which received the same title. This title sticks to him since with the skin, even if itself considers that is to show well little consideration for his/her colleagues in female Québécois science fiction. It certainly one of most prolific, of is translated (English, Rumanian, Japanese, German…), of the most rewarded and most known auteures of Québécois science fiction and fantastic.
