Eleuthera

Eleuthera is an island of the the Bahamas, being 80 kilometers in the east of Nassau. The very lengthened island: 180 km length for a width of hardly 2 km. The population of the island was of 7.999 people at the time of the census of 2000. Its name comes from the Greek and means " libre".

History

The original population of Indians Arawaks reduced in slavery and was off-set by the Spaniards to work in the salt mines with Hispaniola, where it disappeared towards 1550. It is thought that the island remained unoccupied until the first European colonists, of the pilgrims Puritain S, arrive into 1648 of the Bermuda and England, fleeing religious persecutions. These colonists, known under the name of “adventurers of Eleuthera”, gave to the island its current name, which means freedom in Greek.

At the time of the independence of the the Bahamas in 1973, changes took place in the land regulation and all the large tourist installations and the agricultural companies had by foreigners were little by little given up or sold to close relations of the government of the time. Because of the disorders which followed the birth of the new State, of many companies went bankrupt for the period 1980-1985. Today, several abandoned tourist installations are visible on the island like the Rock Sound Club , the Club Med of Governor' S Harbor, and the Cape Eleuthera Resort .

Geography

Located at approximately 80 km of the island of New Providence, the island of Eleuthera has a form curves very lengthened. It is approximately 180 km long when its width is of approximately 2 km on average (but up to 8 kilometers with broadest).

The principal places of settlement of Eleuthera are Governor' S Harbor (the administrative center of the island), Rock Sound, Tarpum Bay, Harbor Island and Spanish Wells.

The island of Eleuthera has also the characteristic to have many sand beaches pink.

Economy

The majority of the current tourist installations of Eleuthera are located on the small island close to Harbor Island, although there remain about it still some on the principal island. Since 2004, the interest of the investors for Eleuthera reappears. Thus, in 2006, of many investments were realized, such as for example, the construction of tourist complex of Cay Knitting machine by investors bahaméens.

Eleuthera has an airport with Cape Eleuthera (code AITA: CONCEALMENT).
