The elephant of forest of Africa or Loxodonta cyclotis is a Mammifère of the family of the Éléphantidé S.
Two species instead of one
Different the elephant S African was regarded a long time as representatives of Sous-espèce S of the taxon Loxodonta africana . Recent genetic studies made it possible to show that the two principal African subspecies Loxodonta africana africana and Loxodonta africana cyclotis were in fact two species distinct: in Africa, it is thus advisable to distinguish from now on the elephant from savanna Loxodonta africana and the elephant of the forests Loxodonta cyclotis .
Main features
The elephant of forest of Africa presents ears generally smaller and more circulars that the other African species. It also has meaner defenses and more right-hand sides. The elephant of forest can weigh up to five tons, and measure 3,5 meters. This species, less known because of the ecological and political obstacles, is more difficult to study and protect. They generally meet in dense forest of central Africa and West Africa, also sometimes but one finds them in edge of forest territory, like the elephants of savanna.
