Elena Smirnova

Elena Aleksandrovna Smirnova is a Danseuse Russian born in 1888 and deceased with Buenos Aires on January 15th, 1934.

Biography

She studied at the imperial school of Saint-Pétersbourg with Michel Fokine and Varvara Nikitina, and with Enrico Cecchetti and Nicolas Legat. She danced Acis and Galatée (Fokine) and was the partner of Vaslav Nijinsky when it finished its studies. She is then committed with the ballet of the Théâtre Mariinsky and thus she dances for the Russian Ballets of Serge de Diaghilev during the season 1909 ( the Dances polovtsiennes of the Prince Igor , the House of Armide (the confidante), the Feast and the Sylphids ).

She continues her career in the imperial Ballet where she dances the repertory of Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, as well as the Don Quichotte of Gorsky (excellent according to Russian criticisms).

The company dissolves and, in 1928, Smirnova, Romanov and Oboukhov are with Buenos Aires where she dances for the last time at the Théâtre Colonist. Then she teaches the Ballet dancing with the national Academy of music (section dances): Maria Ruanova and other Argentinian dancers are its pupils.

Always sick, she dies in the month of January 1934.
