Elegant Avocet

The elegant avocet ( Recurvirostra avosetta ) is the only species of Avocette alive in Europe.

Description

The adults have a white plumage except a black cap and black marks on the wings. They have a nozzle long and curved to the top and of long blue legs. The youthful ones are of color chestnut where the adults carry black, and the white part is often strewn with gray spots.

Habitat

The avocets attend the salt-water estuaries, bays, marshes and other wetlands. They nourish Crustacé S, of Larve S and Ver S.

Reproduction

The avocets nest on the ground, often in small groups, sometimes with other species. Between 3 and 4 eggs are laid, once per annum, in a basin filled with vegetable remains.

They nest in moderate Europe and Asia near or power station. The species is migrating and the majority spend the winter to Africa or South Asia. Some winter in France, Spain or in the south of the England.
