Principle

Size of a grain of rice, the transponder is appeared as a small capsule of glass very resistant, inert and biocompatible. Inside an electronic chip is comprising a single and inalterable code. Its reading is done via wave-radio with a reader, according to the same principles as the chips RFID.

The registration contained in the chip is contained in a database managed, in France, by the LORD, service of the National stud farms located at Pompadour.

Legal requirement

Following the decree of October 5th, 2001, the identification of all équidés in France becomes an obligation under penalty of fine.

The decree of April 30th, 2002 relating to the identification complementary to équidés by the installation of an electronic transponder modified by decree of the 8/26/2003, specifies the obligations concerning the installation of the transponders.

For practical reasons, a calendar of application was set up in order to smooth in time the installation of the transponders on all équidés French.

Calendar of application

January 1st, 2003: the installation relates to the horses of thoroughbred born as from 2003, French trotters qualifés, horses of Pure Spanish race, the inscribable ass S with a stud book and all équidés intended for the slaughter-house.
January 1st, 2004: for all équidés being born in France, the installation of the transponder must be carried out before their weaning and at the latest on December 31st of their year of birth. For all new registration, the installation of the transponder is obligatory.
January 1st, 2005: for all équidés put at the reproduction.
January 1st, 2006: for équidés the participant in a race, a test or contest of breeding, or with any competition or demonstration organized by the National stud farms or an approved organization or ability
January 1st, 2008: for all the équidés alive one on the French soil.
