Electronic War

The electronic Guerre consists of the exploitation of the emissions Radioélectrique S of an adversary and, conversely consists to prevent it from doing as much of it. They are thus all the operations which aim at acquiring the control of the electromagnetic Specter.

The electronic war is subdivided in three branches: the attack, the support and protection.

The electronic attack

The electronic attack consists in preventing the adversary from using the electronic spectrum: they are thus essentially measurements of jamming of its emissions and measurements deception or intrusion. Jamming makes not exploitable the emissions of the adversary; the deception and the intrusion give him false indications or false tracks. The whole of its means was formerly called electronic countermeasures (CME), in English ECM for Electronic Counter Measures .

The electronic attack also includes the use of weapons with energy directed, intended to destroy the unfavourable electronic systems or to plug by laser the personnel (pilot of fighter, infantry…). The electronic attack thus implies the use of average credits , therefore indiscreet. See for example the article Wild Weasel.

The electronic support

The electronic support or electronic information gathers all the average passive of the electronic war. One formerly employed the term of support measures electronic, in English ESM for Electronic Support Measure S . It is a question of using the electron emissions of the adversary to detect its presence, to identify its units, to locate them (Goniométrie), to obtain information on the systems which he uses and to listen to its communications.

The electromagnetic information of origin (ROEM), also called SIGINT, according to its English initials for Signal Intelligence , includes/understands:

  • COMINT (for Communication Intelligence ), the interception and the listening of the communications radio
  • and ELINT (for Electronic Intelligence ), activities of collection and analysis of the nondiscursive emissions.

Electronic protection

Electronic protection includes all the devices and all the procedures making it possible to counter the electronic attacks and the means of electronic information of the adversary. One spoke formerly about electronics protection measures and about against electronic countermeasures (in English ECCM for Electronic Counter Counter Measures ).

It acts is:

  • to conceive buildings or aircraft of furtive combat, i.e. with a “signature” radar reduced by using forms dispersing the waves and of the coatings absorbents;
  • to apply plans of use of frequencies and procedures of radio silence and radar;
  • to use systems of electronic identification;
  • to use electronic systems with escape or jump of frequency, or, for the communications, of the systems with short emissions;
  • to use, for the communications, of the codes and the Coding.
