Electric Light Orchestrated

Electric Light Orchestrated ( ELO ) is a British rock group originating in Birmingham, animated by its leader Jeff Lynne, who was very popular in the years 1970. Influenced by the Beatles and the Rock' roll of Chuck Berry and consorts, his music wanted to be futuristic for the time thanks to the addition of violins and sound effects.

History

The group is formed by Jeff Lynne (before leader of The Idle Race), Roy Wood and BEV Bevan (members of The Move) in 1971 with the intention to create a music of a new kind using the Violon and the Violoncelle in a context rock'n'roll. Free Roy Wood ELO shortly after the exit of the first album (which contains the hit 10538 Overture ), judging that there is not the place for two leaders in the same group, leaving Jeff Lynne main on board.

Roy Wood having involved with him part of the musicians to form Wizzard, ELO recruits new musicians whose clavierist Richard Tandy and records ELO II in 1973 which contains one of its greater successes: Roll Over Beethoven is a resumption of Chuck Berry which begins with an extract of the Fifth Symphony of Beethoven. Follow the albums One The Third Day (1973) and Eldorado (1974) which contains the title Can' T Get It Out Of My Head .

In 1975, the bass player and singer Kelly Groucutt and the violoncellist Melvyn Gale integrate the group for the recording of the album Face The Music , which marks an evolution towards a music extremely in charge of sound effects and more directed radio. The phase of world success starts then. The album contains the titles Evil Woman and Strange Magic .

The album has New World Record (1976) will be sold per million throughout the world and will remain the largest success (album) of the history of the group, grace in particular to the titles Livin' Thing , Do Ya and Telephone Line .

Following the exit of the double album Out Off The Blue (1977) (with individual the Turn To Stone , Sweet Talkin' Woman and Mr. Blue Sky ), ELO launches out in a world tour where the musicians appear on scene leaving a spitting spaceship of the laser beams (in every success of Star Wars ).

On Discovery (1979), the synthetizers replaced the violins and the influence of the Disco is clearly felt. ELO takes down its greater success (individual) with the title Don' T Bring Me Down , dedicated to the laboratory of space Skylab. Are also reproduced on the album individual the Shine has Little Love , Last Train To London and The Diary Of Horace Wimp . Victims of the synthetizer, the violonist Mik Kaminski and the violoncellists Hugh McDowell and Melvyn Gale leave the group shortly after the recording.

In 1980, ELO writes half of the pieces of the musical comedy Xanadu with Olivia Newton-John. Besides the original soundtrack obtains much more success than film itself. One finds there the hits Magic of Olivia Newton-John (number one in the United States) and I' m Alive and All Over The World of ELO. The song titrates film where Olivia Newton-John sings in duet with ELO will be number one in the United Kingdom.

The album Time (1981) is a concept around the Science-fiction and is still sold very well, partly thanks to individual the Hold One Tight (sung partly in French Accroche to your dream… ). The synthetizers are still very present. But the arrival of the new wave makes him wrong and its popularity starts to decrease.

When Secret Messages in 1983 leaves, ELO is already regarded as a group of another time. The quality of the compositions is always with go, as single individual the Rock' Roll is King testifies some, but its music is too marked by the Disco and the Années 1970 and is completely obsolete. In the beginning, Secret Messages was to be an double album, but under the pressure of the recording company, it of it was nothing. Thus of many pieces appeared only on faces B of 45 turns or later in no-claims bonus in boxes and compilations. The piece homage Beatles Forever was never recorded besides to date. After the exit of the album, Kelly Groucutt was returned group.

In 1986, ELO then reduced to a trio carries out off its last album Balance Power (individual: Calling America and So Serious ) before each one from there will follow its own way.

In 1990, the beater BEV Bevan (after a passage at Black Sabbath) form with Mik Kaminski and Kelly Groucutt Electric Light Orchestrated, Part. II without the agreement of Jeff Lynne, however thinking head and heart of the group. This formation will record two albums which will meet a weak success, the fans not being mistaken there as for the musical contents, by concluding that ELO without Jeff Lynne is not ELO. At the end of the Years 1990, BEV Bevan will end up dissolving ELO leaves. 2, but the remainder of the group officiates always to date under the name of The Orchestra . Although offended by the illegal use of the name, Jeff Lynne will judge that it was not worth the sorrow to engage of the legal proceedings.

Jeff Lynne briefly reforms ELO in 2001 and leaves the album Zoom . Except the keyboard Richard Tandy, all the musicians are novel members. The round which followed unfortunately had to be shortened for lack of sufficient sales. Realized after the participation of Jeff Lynne in the Dolly Wilburys, the album gives up electronic sonorities of antan and sees the participation of prestigious guests such as Ringo Starr or George Harrison.

Many pieces of ELO continue their career, either while being partially taken again entirely ( Livin' Thing by The Beautiful South in 2004) or ( Shine has Little Love sampled by Lovefreekz in 2005, Last Train to London by Atomic Kitten in 2003) and Evil Woman by Pussycat Dolls in 2006), or for the needs for publicities (Volkswagen, Ameriquest, Monster.com, all in the United States), or as credits of television programs ( The Office on NBC with the United States, Densha Otoko in Japan). To note that the piece Mr. Blue Sky off appears in the original soundtrack of the film Eternal Sunshine the Spotless Mind of Michel Gondry then, in 2007, like music of a publicity for SFR.
