Elche
Elche ( Valencian Elx in ) is a town of Spain, located in the Province of Alicante (Valencian Communauté). Its population of more than: 215000 inhabitants (2005), constitutes the second provincial town and the third of the Valencian Communauté as a population. The city is crossed by the river Vinalopó. The city has two inheritances of Humanity recognized by UNESCO: only, and larger palm plantation of Europe, the Palm plantation of Elche, located throughout the commune and being the sign most representative of the landscape of the city, and a crown-lyric drama in Catalan language of medieval origin, el Misteri d' Elx , represented each year in August in the Basílica de Santa Maria .
Economy
It is about a very dynamic city economically, in particular in the industrial sector. The industry of the Shoe and the intermediate products constitutes the genuine economic engine of Elx; indeed, almost half of all the shoes produced in Spain are manufactured in factories of the commune, which is one of the principal producers of Europe. Other important economic sectors of Elx are, with share of various industrial activities (metal, chemistry, construction…), trade, tourism and agriculture (dates, grenades, olives), even if this one lost relative importance in the last century. Elche has a center of conferences (called Ciutat d' Elx ), an international airport ( International airport of Altet ) and a university ( Université Miguel Hernández d' Elx ).
