Elberfeld

Elberfeld is an urban district of Wuppertal and corresponds to the historical center of the old city of Elberfeld which constitutes today the largest district of Wuppertal. Associate with it the districts of Elberfeld-West and Uellendahl-Katernberg.

History

It is in 1161 that one meets for the first time the name of Elberfeld and in 1176 that of the castle. This city, made up of a castle, and perhaps of an older village, accepted in 1610 the urban right. In 1888, the commune of Sonnborn was incorporated in the city-circle of Elberfeld.

Of 1861 until 1929, Elberfeld was a autonomous City-circle.

The law of communal reorganization of the industrial area of Rhineland-Westphalia of July 29th 1929, joins together Elberfeld at the towns of Barmen, Cronenberg, Ronsdorf and Vohwinkel to constitute “Barmen-Elberfeld”. The same year the municipal council of the commune which had just been founded decided to propose with the ministry of Prussian State, which one renamed the city “Wuppertal”. The proposal was approved in January 1930.
