Cagnes-sur-Mer (in Occitan Of Provence: of ˈmaʀ writing Canha de Mar according to the traditional standard or Cagno de Mar according to the Norme mistralienne) is a common French, located in the department of the the Alpes-Maritimes and the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure and which belongs to the Communauté of agglomeration of Nice-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants is the Cagnois (in occitan of Provence canhencs/cagnenc ).
The name of Cagnes is generally explained by the name of anybody Latin Cannius . One can also consider the pre-indo-European root kan (= height), which corresponds to the situation of the medieval city.
Geography
Cagnes-sur-Mer is a city of the south-east of the France, located on banks of the the Mediterranean, between Saint-Laurent-of-VAr and Villeneuve-Loubet. It extends along a handle offering nearly four kilometers of beach and is surrounded by hills, of which that of the castle which culminates with 90 meters of altitude. Two rivers cross it: the Cagne and Malvan.Fourth city of the department of the the Alpes-Maritimes, it includes/understands an old medieval borough perched on a hill dominated by the castle Grimaldi, a modern city with its feet and a village of fishermen, called the Cross-country race of Cagnes, in edge of sea.
History
Cagnes-sur-Mer is transformed at the 11th century into medieval borough. From its proximity with the river VAr which is used as border between the County of Provence and that of Savoy, it becomes in 1388 an important border post. After having suffered from many frontier conflicts at the 16th century, the village knows one period of calm under the reign of Louis XIII before undergoing new invasions under the reigns of Louis XIV and Louis XV.Top of Cagnes : the history of the city is closely related to that of its castle. Indeed, it is in 1309 that Raynier Grimaldi, coseignor of Monaco, becomes lord of Cagnes-sur-Mer. He makes build a castle which will become soon a property of the branch of the Grimaldi d' Antibes, until the revolution. At the 17th century, Jean-Henri Grimaldi, marquis de Corbons and baron de Cagnes, under the protection of Louis XIII and Richelieu, transforms the medieval castle into a comfortable residence in which it carries out a sumptuous life. But at the time of the French revolution, the family Grimaldi is driven out city. The castle is left with the abandonment until a private individual repurchases it and in 1875 restores it. The last marquis de Cagnes and of Antibes dies out in Belgium at the 20th century.
Cross-country race of Cagnes : at the end of the 18th century, fishermen come from Menton twice the year to throw their nets in water cagnoises. These last so full of fish that they decide to settle definitively on this coast, then marshy, are quickly joined by of Cagnois which give up their agricultural activities. The small village does not cease thriving thanks to fishing reaching its apogee at the beginning of the 20th century with a fleet of more than one hundred the “pointed ones” (name given to the local fishing vessels).

The Grimaldi castle-museum
Bought by the municipality in 1939, the castle is transformed into museum in 1946. In addition to its architectural interest and its fresco representing the fall of Phaéton, realized in 1620 by Giulio Benso, the castle shelters an ethnographic museum of the olive-tree, the donation Suzy Solidor, including/understanding forty portraits of the singer realized by great names of the painting of the beginning of the 20th century and a museum of Mediterranean modern art. Each summer, the castle also proposes temporary exhibitions within the framework of its International festival of painting.
The Renoir field
It is in 1903 that the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir acquires of a property, in the district of Collettes, in which he will live until his death in 1919. Today transformed into museum, this field proposes, in addition to the visit of the workshop of the painter, the tables of the pearly period (1889 with 1919), of the sculptures, the lithographies and the preparatory studies.It should be noted that many artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Chaïm Soutine, Raoul Dufy, Léonard-Tsuguharu Foujita, Victor Vasarely, Brace Kisling, Yves Truss, Mouloudji, Georges Simenon, Jean Villeri, Brigitte Bardot, Suzy Solidor, Georges Ulmer… remained and worked in Cagnes-sur-Mer, called until in the Sixties the “Montmartre of the Riviera”.
The hippodrome
In September 1952 the Hippodrome of the Riviera opens its doors with provisional installations. Eight years later, in December 1960, it is the official unveiling. Since, the infrastructures did not cease developing and improving, which enabled him to become one of the most important hippodromes of France.
Municipal media library
House of Master of the 19th century, sundial on the frontage, open in December 1983 by Mr. Giacosa, the media library proposes written documents: books, reviews, books of artists… and audio-visual: VHS, DVD, CDRom.
