Johannes Japetus Smith Steenstrup is a zoologist Danish, born the March 8th 1813 in Vang on the old island of Thy and dead the June 20th 1897 with Copenhagen.
After studies of Medicine and Natural history, it goes on scientific journeys in the Jutland, in Ireland, Scotland and Norway of 1836 with 1844.
In 1841, he becomes lecturer in Botanique and Minéralogie with the Académie Soroe. In 1845, he becomes professor of zoology at the university of Copenhagen then directs the Natural history museum of natural history of the city in 1848.
He is in particular the author of On the propagation and the development of the animals through a series of generations alternating (1842) and of Recherches on the existence of the hermaphrodites in nature (1846).
He discovers, independently of Adelbert von Chamisso (1781-1838), the alternation of generation in heredity. He studies particularly the Céphalopode S.
One of the publications of the Musée of zoology of the university of Copenhagen bears today its name Steenstrupia .
