El Torito
El Torito (of its name English complete El Torito Bootable CD Specification ) is an extension to the Norme ISO 9660 on the describing CD-ROM how a Ordinateur can Boot er starting from a CD-ROM.
Its first version left in January 1995 like joint proposal between IBM and the manufacturer BIOS Phoenix Technologies.
Operation
According to the standard El Torito , the BIOS of a recent PC can seek a program of boot on compatible CD ISO 9660. If it is the case, the BIOS then will assign a peripheral number of to the CD reader. This number will be is 80 (emulation of the hard drive), 00 (emulation of the disk drive) or a number randomly if no emulation is necessary.The emulations are mainly used to make it possible old OS version to start starting from CD in their making believe that it start starting from an hard drive or of a disk drive.
Origin of the name
According to the legend, this standard was named starting from a restaurant of the same name (with Irvine in California) in lequelle it would have been created.
