El Paso

El Paso is a city of American south-west located in the State of the Texas. It is the 6th texane city in importance and is in the most Western part of this one, with approximately 1140 meters of altitude (3762 feet). It is also the administrative seat county of El Paso.

El Paso is located at the border of the Mexico on one of banks of the river Río Grande whereas the imposing Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez division the other bank. The combined population of the two cities exceeds the 2 million inhabitants constituting the most important frontier agglomeration in America. The Franklin mountains divide the city into two halves for a surface of 649 km ². According to the Census in 2000, El Paso has 563.662 English inhabitants (: " El Pasoans") more two thirds are of Hispanic origin.

History

Archaeological discoveries announce a thousand-year-old human presence in the area of El Paso. During the era of the first Spanish colonizers, the Manso and the Suma lived the soil as brought back by the forwarding of Juan de Oñate of 1598. In 1827, Ponce of León establishes a ranch on the site of the current city. During the period of the Republic of Texas, the area belongs at the Mexican State of Chihuahua but joint in Texas at the time of the entry in the Union. A Trading post named Franklin is founded a few years later before becoming El Paso (name El Paso del Norte, indicating Juarez) in 1859.

Historical places and Museums

Fort Bliss is an important base of the American army, established in 1848.

The Mission San Elizario (1777) is a historical vault located in the village of San Elizario in suburbs of El Paso. One also finds there an old prison attended by Billy The Kid.

The museum of U.S. To border Patrol (the frontier police force) is in El Paso.

The El Paso Diablos (Baseball) plays at Cohen Stage (built in 1990) in American Association

The Sun Bowl is an annual match of championship of collegial football played El Paso since 1936. The Sun Bowl Stadium (built in 1963) is located on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).
