El Mourouj

El Mourouj is a city of the Banlieue southern of Tunis. It is located at 5 kilometers of Tunis (between Ben Arous and the sebkha Séjoumi) and is attached to the Gouvernorat of Ben Arous except for the district El Mourouj 2 which is attached to the Gouvernorat of Tunis.

It is about a new Ville built by the State in the Années 1980 to organize the space growth of the Agglomération tunisoise confronted with the extension of the spontaneous habitat during one time of strong land crisis. Programmed as of 1977 and envisaged to accommodate 130.000 inhabitants, the city gradually extended to reach today 80.000 inhabitants divided out of 6 districts (El Mourouj 1 to 6). Alternating suburban habitat and residential buildings, the city accommodates a population of middle-classes. She constitutes today a regional center for the agglomeration of Tunis.

In addition, it is an example of the difficult emergence of a Ville with the traditional urban functions (administrative, commercial, cultural, educational, etc). Moreover, the city is built at the origin near largest Déchetterie of the country.

Confronted with a very important increase in its population, generally of social status relatively low, the city knows serious dysfunctions until the Tunisian authorities undertake to rehabilitate. An association of inhabitants is formed as of 1989 and constitutes a lobby which is recipient of the project of urban Réhabilitation (according to its president Adel Azzabi). Thus, the dechettery is closed and its site is used partially for the opening of an green area of 100 Hectare S: the Montazeh city park. A line of light subway, connecting El Mourouj to Tunis and comprising 11 stations, is in construction since 2003.
