El Corte Inglés is the most important Spanish chain of department stores. It is present in Spain and with the Portugal. It is the equivalent of the Galeries Lafayette in France.

History

1934 : foundation by Ramón Areces Rodríguez which had a store of tailor to the Calle Preciados of Madrid. With his death in 1989 its nephew takes again the torch.
- 1995 : El Corte Inglés buys in aubaine the second channel of the sector Galerias Preciados.
- 2001 : entry on the market Portuguese with Lisbon.
- 2006 : Isidoro Alvarez, nephew of Areces, announce the arrival of El Corte Inglés in Italy.
Topicality
El corte Ingles is a very active company as regards diversification of its activity. It launched, in particular in order to compete with the stores of proximity Opencor, a supermarket which opens eighteen hours per day.
