El-Harrach

El-Harrach is the XVIIIe district of Algiers, being located at the east of the capital Algérie. Its old name is Maison Carrée .

Most known of its districts are Beaulieu, Bellevue, Lavigerie, Belfort, residential districts of which architecture is only made up of villas of French colonial style built at the beginning of the Années 1950; they were located on Right Bank of the city. The districts Earthenware, P.L.M., On the Station (1° street 2°eme street and 3° street, Holy Corrine, Fouquereau, Dussolier, Djenane Mabrouk, Cressonnière, the road of Algiers are located on left bank of the town of El-Harrach. At the time of the Turks, the city was called Bordj Sidi Yahia . The city is immortalisée by its Wadi on which a bridge was built by the bey Sidi Brahim in order to connect two banks. One can also note the district of the Dunes.

The name of Maison Carrée was given to the city by French in reference to the carée house located in full barracks of the 45 E regiment of the transmissions and which have nothing to do with that of Nice. Regarded as the cradle of the 45e Battalion of Transmissions and later the 45e Regiment of Transmissions, this bordj , former strong Turkish built in 1724, consists of a square masonry to the very thick walls, from approximately 80 mêtres on side. It is from there that name comes from the village.

The city shelters also the largest prison of Algeria, located at the upstream of the city, in full center of the Belfort district on the heights of El-Harrach.

Maison Carrée was also the name given by its students to the agricultural Institute of Algeria, created in 1905 under the name of École of Algerian agriculture and famous in 1946, National school of Agriculture. This old school bears the agronomic name of National institute today.
