Ekenäs

Ekenäs , Tammisaari in Finnish, is a city south of the Finland, in the area of Uusimaa. It is a bastion of the suédophones of Finland.

History

The castle of Raseborg is built at the 14th century and manages the area. Its ruins are today one of major tourist curiosities of the commune, classified national landscape. In 1528, the small village of Ekenäs becomes an administrative center for the neighbouring area, then is proclaimed city by Gustave Ier Vasa in 1546. It becomes throughout the 17th century (which see the construction of its famous church) and 18th century a small shopping mall, with a port of moderate importance. The young person Elias Lönnrot will make his secondary studies there, returning the weekends in his family with Sammatti.

The center of wood which makes the charm of the east city mainly builds after the large fire of 1821. The city counts approximately 1.500 inhabitants in 1850. The opening of the railway Hyvinkää - Hanko in 1873 allows the rise of industry.

Its strategic position will be worth to him to be heavily bombarded and evacuated in 1941, during the Guerre of Continuation (battles of Hanko). In 1977, the city counts approximately 7.500 inhabitants when it amalgamates with two close farming communities ( Ekenäs-countryside and Snappertuna ). It absorbs finally the commune of Tenhola in 1993, carrying its population with nearly 15.000 inhabitants.

Geography

The city merges with its archipelago: it counts 1.298 islands and 1.671 km of coast, very cut out. It is not of this fact surprising only common counts nearly 5.000 houses of holidays, by doing one of the capitals of the Finnish summer. Part of the external islands belongs to the national park of the archipelago of Ekenäs. The vegetation is atypical enough for Finland because of the southernmost situation of the commune (it is 2nd more in the south of the country). Besides one finds there in particular many Chêne S, Ekenäs meaning peninsula of the oak .

The communes is crossed by the main road 25 Hanko - Mäntsälä.

Helsinki is with only 93 km, and Turku to 107 km. The common neighbors are Hanko in south-west (34 km of center in center), Ingå in the east, Karis and Pohja in the North-East, but also Kisko and Perniö in north and Särkisalo in the North-West (Finland of South-west).
