Artistic biography
The documentary style seems to be the only manner of tackling the subject of the atomic bomb. However Eikoh Hosoe evoked to him personal memories in its work, by a theatrical and mythical style. This visual language being really different from what one could see in a culture considered for his authority. In the Années 1950, when it was still student, Eikoh Hosoe photographed the male prostitutes as all that touched with the small glaucous streets and other equivocal bars of Tokyo. The goal being to show a company in full evolution, it adopted a certain documentary point of view which it gave up quickly. In 1959 its meeting with Tatsumi Hijikata (a young dancer), made him take a way definitely more theatrical than the documentary traditional one. Allured by the spectacle considered to be scandalous of Hijikata (an adaptation of a novel of Mishima approaching topics like the erotism and homosexuality), Eikoh Hosoe succeeds in convincing Hijikata to work with him on its film Navel and Atomic bomb , a mythical and démoniaque ballet. The physical presence of Tatsumi Hijikata was attractive almost divine, unthinkable thing in a culture where the naked one does not exist.
The body thus became an obsession for Eikoh Hosoe and the work of the writer Yukio Mishima a major project in its work. Of its first book, " Man and Woman" who is built as a spectacle where its naked sensual would be a repairing place in a destroyed company, or " The Cosmos off Gaudi" where the architecture of Barcelona is seen like the curves of an human body whose bodies are constructions of Gaudí, to the settings in narcissistic scenes of Mishima in " Ordeal by Roses" or spell-bindings of Tatsumi Hijikata in " Kamaitachi" , Eikoh Hosoe wants to show the gasoline of the things through the settings in theatrical scenes which it works out.
Inspired by its contemporaries such as Bill Brandt, Ansel Adams or Edward Weston as well as the Buddhist religion and shintoïste, Eikoh Hosoe becomes the Master of an imperturbable and crowned search Beau. Photographer, realizer of film, professor, writer or director of the museum KMoPa, Eikoh Hosoe are one of Large contemporary Japanese photography. And in spite of Japanese mentality, the magnifiée presence of the naked body was for him not only one visual research, but also a reflection on the identity and ego.
