Egmond aan Zee

Egmond aan Zee is a village of the Holland-Septentrional province of to the Netherlands. It belongs to the common of Bergen. Until 2001, the city belonged to the commune of Egmond.

The city counts approximately 5  086 inhabitants (2001).

History

Egmond aan Zee is most known of the three village of “Egmond”. It is a popular destination of holidays on the seaside since the beginning of the 20th century which had the reputation to have a repairing sea air. There were establishments of cure intended for the children often managed by the religious institutions or charity associations. The city has a Phare built in 1834 called “Jan van Speijk” which was a famous Dutch captain.

In the past, parts of the village disappeared following the action from the sea. The inhabitants had since the beginning of their installation to fight against the action of the sea. The majority of the inhabitants were sinners. There remain traces of this activity such as for example the houses of sinners. It was of tiny houses on the seaside where the sinners lived. There exists also a monument in remembering the sinners and an old old people's home of sinners called " Prins Hendrik Stichting".
