Egg of Colomb
The expression “the egg of Colomb” comes from an anecdote.
At the time of a meal in the presence of the navigator Christophe Colomb, a guest would have liked to minimize the importance of discovered Nouveau World while saying: “It was enough to think of it”. To answer this provocation, the Explorateur proposed a challenge with its guests. He asked them to make hold upright a hard-boiled egg in his shell. Nobody succeeds except Christophe Colomb which crushed the end of egg to make it hold upright on a basis. He exclaimed then: “It was enough to think of it! ”
Thus the expression “the egg of Colomb” is sometimes used to qualify a simple but clever idea.
