Nymph

Égérie is a nymph whose Roman king Numa Pompilius was claimed inspired when it set up the Roman religious institutions.

Egery, Camène (nymph) révérée of the Romans like goddess of the sources, lived the wood of Aricie, close to Rome. Numa Pompilius was inserted in this wood under pretext of consult this nymph, in order to give to its intentions the authority of the religion. According to Ovide, Égérie was an young woman that Numa married, and with which it shared the care of the government.

One shows still today close to old the Porte Capène, in the small valley of the Caffarella, the cave and the fountain of Égérie.
