Egberto Gismonti

Egberto Gismonti (born in 1947 with Carmo, RJ, Brazil) is a Compositeur, Guitariste and Brazilian Pianiste.

He began his studies in music at the six years age to the piano. After having studied the classical music during 15 years, it went to Paris to study with Nadia Boulanger (orchestration and analyzes), and the type-setter Jean Barraqué, a disciple of Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern.

After its return to Brazil, Gismonti discovered horizons broader than those of the traditional world of the music. It was attracted by the ideas of Orchestration and complex agreements of Maurice Ravel, as well as the Choro, a popular Brazilian instrumental music where various types of guitars intervene. To play this music, it passed from the Piano to the Guitare, starting on the instrument with 6 cords and while passing to the 8 cords in 1973. It spent two years to be tested with various tunings and seeking new sounds, which is reflected in its use of Flûte S, of Kalimba S, the Sho, of the voice, the bells, etc

With the beginning of the year 1970, it had posed the bases of its current design and listened to musicians as varied as Django Reinhardt and Jimi Hendrix. For him, the achievements of Jimi Hendrix were the proof that the words " populaire" and " sérieux" were not antipodes: It does not have there a difference between the two styles in music… .

In the years 1980, he collaborated of many times with Naná Vasconcelos, and of many European musicians, in particular Jan Garbarek, recording for the label of jazz ECM.
