Effigy Mounds National Monument

Effigy Mounds National Monument (the national monument of the tumulus in the shape of silhouettes of animals) is a national monument American located on the border of the counties of Allamakee and Clayton in the Iowa.

The prehistoric Tumulus are current in the plains of the Midwest to the coasts of the Atlantic, but there is only in this area which they were built in the shape of animals, mammals, birds or reptiles. The monument comprises 206 tumulus out of 10 km ² of which 31 is silhouettes of animals and the others simply conical. The Indians since 500 {{avjc}} until European colonization built many tumulus. When the American meadows were cultivated, much these hillocks disappeared. Effigy Mounds National Monument is the most important site of tumulus the United States.
