The name of the city is resulting from a German man, “Effrito”, which posed the first stone of the city. This name changed gradually: Effrito - Efritinger - Everdingen - Efferding - Eferding.Obtained the habit of city in 1222, Eferding is one of the oldest cities of Austria (after Enns in 1212 and Vienna in 1221). For consequence the “Eferdinger” started to build a large rampart around the city. Nobody could enter or leave Eferding without passing by one of the three doors of the city: the “Schaumburgertor”, the “Linzertor” and the “Peuerbachertor”.
During the fifteenth century, one built the church of Eferding. This neogothic cathedral of the style represents a true artistic treasure. In 1727, its bell-tower was destroyed by fire but it again was built some time later.

During the Second world war, the town of Eferding remained fortunately almost intact.
