Chronology of the village

Before 1534

Little information comes to us from this time, except that the historians know that the neighborhoods were occupied by the Amerindian tribe of the Micmacs.

At the time of great explorations

It was Jacques Cartier, which redécouvrit the area at the summer 1534, having described the area of the neighborhood seen of the coast. However, no proof indicates that he visited Eel River Crossing.

At the time of the French Mode

Being part of the seigniory of Iberville in 1690, possession of the king de France Louis XIV, in the north of the Acadie, the attempts at colonization for the future site of the village and the county of Restigouche at the time did not take place (gold, few seigniories were colonized in Acadie at that time), although the area was explored and that toponymy took a French face, whose some names return still today.

Of the end of the French mode at the beginning of the XXe century

Colonization starts apparently towards the end of XVIIIe and at the beginning of the XIXe century.

Towards the Years 1840, according to the Rebellion of 1838, one of the rebels flees the Low-Canada (auj. Quebec) and is established in Eel River, formerly named River-with-Eels (French term meaning " Eel River"). It is established then as teacher. However, a scandal due to sexual harassment puts its employment in danger and the village without top below.

Of the development to incorporation (1900 to 1966)

The demographic rise of the village takes place after the Second world war.

Since incorporation (1966 with auj.)

In 1966, the village was incorporated and the first Mayor was Ralph Savoy.

In the Years 1960, the village had the privilege to accommodate the Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, who signed the register of guests of the village.

In the Years 1980, one builds a new municipal complex with a fire station on the street Savoy which will replace the old municipal room and fire station become obsolete then. This old building, built in 1957, will be demolished in 1998 to make place with a monument commemorating the 50 years of the brigade of fire of the village (1948-1998).

A October 20th 1996, a plane filled with American hunters and their catches was crushed in the village. A delegation of Lowell, Massachusetts presented itself to a funeral service which took place with the Church co. Trinity of this same village.

November 29th, 2007, the factory of pastes and papers of Dalhousie closed its doors, leaving several people of the village without employment. In truth, this industry had been the principal employer since 1930.
