Porter was born Edwin Stanton Porter the 21 April 1870 in the town of Connellsville, with Philadelphia. It is deceased the 30 April 1941 in a hotel with New York City forgotten by American cinema industry.
Biography
Déscolarisé at fourteen years, Edwin Stanton Porter made a multitude of trades, such as Télégraphe, but always had a passion for the Théâtre and an admiration for Georges Méliès. Between 1893 and 1895 it carries out its service Militaire in the marine American, and in collaboration with the Admiral Bradley Allan Fiske, Edwin develops the electric Télémètre of Fiske. Having very good knowledge in electricity and Mécanique, it is engaged by the Vitascope Marketing Company in 1895, which enables him to enter the universe Cinématographique as a Projectionniste. It continued to employ its competences Technologiques in the Laboratoire of Edison Manufacturing Company, and to exert as a independent Projectionniste with the Théâtre Eden Museum in 1898.
It tested throughout its career, to improve the apparatuses of Photos and projections, but always without much success, even if it invented an improved projector called Projectorscope, providing a Image more luminous and more regular, known under the name of Beadnell (in the honor of its associate) The production of this product ceased when the laboratory of Edwin burned in 1900, which obliged it to return as a producer and Directeur to the 21st studio of the Edison Manufacturing Company.
The majority of the Dramatic films and the short Documentaires realized by the Edison company at the beginning of the 20th century were carried out and directed by Edwin S. Porter. Its first large cinematographic films were regarded as Chefs-d'oeuvre, and in particular Life off year American Fireman (1903) and the Flight of large the rapid (1903). Edwin remained Technician in the heart, developed an improved apparatus called the simplex and which allowed a Freeze frame as well as an unfolding of the screen.
Edwin leaves the Edison Company in 1909 to create the Rex Film Company in 1910, which will be transformed later into Universal Pictures (later known under the name of NBC Universal)
Edwin S. Porter dies in the hotel of Taft of New York at the 71 years age.
