Edwige of Silesia

Sainte Hedwige of Silesia (1174, Andechs, Bavaria - October 14th 1243, Trzebnica, Poland) was born under the name of Hedwige d' Andechs and is known in Poland under the name of Jadwiga Śląska . It is the girl of Berthold III of Andechs-Meran, Count of the the Tyrol and prince of Carinthie and Istrie, and his Agnès wife of Misnie. A sister of Hedwige married the king André II of Hungary. From this marriage was born Sainte Elisabeth from Hungary, so known under the name of Elisabeth of Thuringe. Another of his/her sisters became abbess.

Hedwige was high with the convent of the Bénédictin are of Kitzingen. At 18 years, she married Henri Ier Bearded the, duke of Silesia, which will become in 1232 duke of Cracow. Of this marriage 7 children will come, whose Henri II the Piles which will be killed with the battles of Legnica in 1241.

After the death of her husband in 1238, Hedwige was withdrawn with the convent of the Cistercien born from Trzebnica which it had founded in 1202.

Hedwige and her husband would have lived in a very pious way. Hedwige would have had an exemplary life, helping needy, going foot-naked in any season, distributing its fortune to the Church and the poor.

She died in Trzebnica the October 14th 1243. She was buried in Trzebnica but its Relique S is preserved at the Cloître of Andechs.

Hedwige was canonized in 1267 by the Pape Clément IV.

It is the owner of Berlin, the Silesia and its capital Wrocław, Trzebnica, the Diocèse of Görlitz, Andechs and Cracow.

Holy Hedwige of Silesia is celebrated the October 16th.
