Delivered to itself, with its heart out of gold, its innocence and its blades sharp as fingers, it will be confronted with the life in a company of which it will include/understand neither the codes, neither rules, neither rights, nor duties. But where he will discover certain emotions… like the love.
History
The place
Suburbia is the place or is held the history: small peaceful village ( Suburb means " banlieue" in English); the light is morning. One hears dogs, birds which chirp… The houses all are of the same type, style prefabricated well Net quite specific to the colors pastel… The vicinity sprinkles its garden, repairs its roof or mows the lawn… Burton will accentuate throughout film the “square” aspect (with clean and with appeared) of all these houses and its inhabitants: one will see later the husbands who leave their car the garage, all together in the same movement, to go with work, etcThis city leaves straight of imagination Tim Burton. It tries to represent there in a caricatural way a certain medium of the company of the years 70-80. Vis-a-vis these suburbs, the mysterious and fantastic castle of the inventor, seeming if pushing back seen outside.
Two completely opposite images which however will meet: throughout film, the roles of the haunted castle and harmonious suburbs are reversed to become a harmonious castle and haunted suburbs.
It seems that all that is a direct criticism of Burbank (California), place where Tim Burton grew; located not far from many movie studios but where all was calm and without interest. It introduces to a city of the same type in Strange Christmas of Mr Jack .
Almost “hidden” inside, Pegg finds with the foot of the castle a superb garden or all the vegetation is cut, carved carefully; representing stags, a ptérodactyle (there was of them already one in Frankenweenie ), other animals and especially; in the medium, a large open hand.
It penetrates in the castle, desert except a whole heap of dusty machines to the disproportionate wheels.
The castle represents the insulation and the misery of Edward, the castle is gray, sad, damages, not finished, but it contains a sumptuous garden. It is a place inhabited by a heart, that of Edward. The castle itself represents Edward.
The character of Edward
In some Flashback S that Tim Burton decides to put in images, it to us is revealed the first memories of Edward. These memories proceed all in the mysterious castle of its creator, who seeks to invent a robot with human appearance, equipped of an entirely alive organization. One sees it in a long dolly which sweeps the " room of opération" : a draft is caught in the pages of a book which illustrates the various stages of the creation of this artificial man, the last page representing a traditional businessman in costume, integrated obviously perfectly into the company which one knows (or that one grows to know).
This man, it is not Edward, but “Mister everyone”. And Edward is not “Mister everyone”, but the stage which precedes it, a simple person intelligent and innocent, silent kind of Adam, with the large black eyes, which with them-only manage to animate this sad face pale and strewn with scars.
The creator did not have time to complete his creation, it disappeared front, leaving it with what it just had time to transmit to him, delivered to itself. It is starting from this precise point that the account begins from Edward to the money hands.
One day, a saleswoman of beauty products residing in suburbs will make a turn in this curious castle perched on a small hill, after all, perhaps will find she a new customer… She did not believe so well to fall, since in this old residence a priori abandoned hides, into a corner from the room, a timid young man carrying of the blades in the place of the fingers, but which proves strictly inoffensive. She decides to lodge it at her, with the center even of her hearth located at the right in the middle of a pie of clean maisonnettes, where happy people and " live; without histoires" , in Brave New World.
Stories, Edward will bring from there while becoming the new center of interest of the village; initially accommodated with open arms by all the ladies of the residence (Edward, wire of only one father, attracts all the women from a maternal point of view, although a sexual dimension is also present), which remains in full admiration in front of its talents of sculptor, it will end up being driven out about it, marked of robber, rapist and dangerous maniac.
Edward in the company
Only Kim (Winona Ryder), an young girl fair, beautiful, majestic, with which it will fall in love, will include/understand it; only possible reason, it begins hardly its life and is not integrated yet into the wheels of its community. It will even drop her boyfriend, a kind of rich person child delinquent and capricious, in order to offer its heart to Edward, the space of a few seconds only ( " - To me Tightens, says him low it. - I cannot pas" ', Edward answers, not knowing what to make its sharp hands). The glance is a paramount concept in Edward with the money hands. One remembers this scene very moving where one asks Edward in a television program if it has a boyfriend. Edward, as an answer, silently looks right in front of the camera as if it fixedly looked at opposite Kim whom, at this moment, looks at the station and inevitably crosses the force of the glance in love with Edward. By this effect of new mirror, Burton tells the upsetting dumbness of evocation of Edward, the barrier of “the social image” between the two lovers and the mirror like cave of the desire and confusion. The first meeting between Edward and Kim is played besides through an effect of mirror: Kim looks himself in the ice of her room and discovers with horror the presence of Edward in her own bed.
But the most outstanding glance is without any doubt that petrified of the inventor of Edward (the extraordinary Vincent Price) when he succumbs to an heart attack. Its eyes indicate terror, either by the conscience of its death or by the sudden conscience to have created an unfinished being, Edward. This plan of a frightening beauty hypnotizes the spectator literally and recalls one of the images of the credits of opening, the movement in spiral on the closed eyes of the inventor.
It is there question of a juxtaposition between conformism and the odd one.
These scissors are ironically what cuts Edward of the outside world and what wounds it body and heart.
