Edward Yang (杨德昌, born the November 6th 1947 with Shanghai in China and dead the June 29th 2007 with Beverly Hills with the the United States), is a realizer and scenario writer, figure of the Taiwanese new wave.

Biography

Youth with the cinema

Dechang Yang, known as Edward is born with Shanghai on November 6th, 1947 from a father confucéen and a Christian mother . It grows with Taipei after the exile of his parents in Taiwan. He studies the Electronic engineering in Taiwan before studying with the University of Florida from where he leaves graduate in 1974. At that time and during the time which follows, he works in Center for Informatics Research. Although interested by the Cinema since childhood, it chooses to continue its career in high technologies. Moreover, he had been convinced at the time of a short passage to USC Film School that the cinema world was not for him, in particular because he considered it too commercial. He thus leaves to work with Seattle in the Informatique.

While working in Seattle, Yang discovers the film Aguirre, the anger of God of Werner Herzog who starts again his passion for the cinema and introduces it with traditional European cinema and in particular Antonioni.

Beginnings in the cinema

Yang goes back to Taiwan to write the scenario and to help in the production of a Téléfilm hong-kongais off The Winter 1905 . After having carried out some telefilms and series, Yang begins with the cinema in 1982 with the Short film Attentes for the collection In Our Time often regarded as the starting point from “new the Taiwanese cinema”. The film is a portrait of the experiments of an young girl at the time of her Puberté.

A talented realizer

Yang continues with several major works. Contrary to its contemporary Hou Hsiao-hsien interested by the countryside, Yang treats mainly city. It analyzes the environment and the relations in urban Taiwan in almost all its films. Its first Feature-length film, This day on the beach (1983) east followed the History of Taipei where his friend the scenario writer Hou Hsiao-hsien plays. The two films are preceded in many festivals. Will follow the Terrorists in 1986, to him also crowned success. It is a thriller with the multiple narration on the urban life which takes again the topics of the crime and alienation expensive with Antonioni.

Edward Yang assembles its own independent structure, Yang and his gang. It produces its fourth film, a beautiful day of summer which leaves in 1991. The film examines the development of the Taiwanese company after 1949, between the gangs of Adolescent S and the influence of the pop culture American.

Yang continues in 1994 with the Satire S Confusion at Confucius then Mahjong in 1996 which explores Taiwan through the glance of foreign characters.

International recognition

In 2000, Yang leaves Yi Yi which is its most known film. Among other rewards, it receives the price of the setting in scene in Cannes. Yi Yi is the portrait of the family Jian, which follows three generations of a Mariage to a Enterrement.

In its films, Yang examines the fight between the Modernité and the Tradition, just as the relations between the Art and the Commerce. Yang collaborated with many Taiwanese artists such Wu Nien-jen or Hou Hsiao-hsien. He teaches the cinema and the Théâtre at the National university of art of Taipei. He often engages his students as actors.

In 2007, Yang prepares the project The Wind with Jackie Chan which stops because of the disease of Yang. He dies the June 29th 2007 with Beverly Hills, of the continuations of a Cancer of the Côlon.
