Strange Christmas of Mr Jack ( The Nightmare Before Christmas ) is it forty-and-unième feature film of animation of the studios Disney, left in 1993. Realized by Henry Selick according to an original screenplay of Tim Burton and coproduit by Touchstone (subsidiary of Walt Disney Pictures) and Skellington Inc., it uses the technique of animation image by image.

Synopsis

The film presents the history of Jack Skellington, a scarecrow with the paces of skeleton ( Pumpkin King , “king of pumpkins” in the original version), alive in the town of Halloween. As a king of terror, Jack occupies its days to prepare the next festival of Halloween. But the terrible scarecrow, wearied this repetitive and monotonous life, will make the discovery of a quite strange village, that of Christmas. And if this year, it were him which was going to celebrate Christmas?

  • This film is the development of a poem written in the Années 1980 by Tim Burton whereas it was stimulating in the studios Disney. Only three characters, Jack, his dog Zero and the Father Christmas appeared in the text of origin. The character of Skellington Jack had already made a short appearance in the film Beetlejuice , then it remade a passage in the form of wink in the film James and giant fishing , whose Tim Burton is producer, in the role of the captain of a ghost ship.

In this film, Tim Burton treats marginality, set of themes already employed in all its former films, but also of sincerity. Jack Skellington wishes to replace the Father Christmas and to offer itself the gifts. But of the gifts which are happiness for an inhabitant of Halloween (snake, spider, skeleton, bat…) are not it for a normal child. But precisely, what normality?
C' is precisely of the thin border between normal and abnormal , real and unreal , happiness and misfortune, of which it is question. In the name of which rule, of which criterion, can one decide arbitrarily what is good or bad . Tim Burton says it itself: “In the United States, a label is stuck to you. One says that so-and-so is intelligent, another to you is beautiful, and such other is stupid. It is in my irritation towards these principles that it is advisable to find the origin of Edward to the money hands and of Strange Christmas of Mr Jack ” ( Tim Burton by Tim Burton ). Without philosophical or dogmatic claim, Burton delivers simply a lesson of tolerance. Moreover, this first cartoon film is also the occasion for Tim Burton to give free course to its passion for the festival of Halloween.

It is also advisable to evoke Edgar Allan Poe, the favorite author of the scenario writer. Its more famous poem, the Corbel , had a durable impact on Burton. Common points exist between the cursed poet and the scenario writer. Both carried out very dark poems, putting in scene sad beings, whose loneliness seems broken only by the presence of an animal: a corbel for one, a dog for the other. Moreover, the poems were used as a basis to the scenario writers who elaborate of the stories which respected the spirit of their authors but who were relatively modified: the poem of Poe was transformed into a burlesque comedy, while that of Burton became a musical comedy and macabre.
