Edward O. Thorp

Dr. Edward Oakley Thorp (American, born on August 14th, 1932 in Chicago): professor of mathematics and author of several works. It is largely known to be the author of the famous Happy book “the Dealer” (1962) the first book to prove mathematically that one can gain in Blackjack only by counting the charts. It is not only one technique to gain with the Blackjack (play) which was made public but especially a mathematical process which proved reliable. What was worth to him the title of inventor of the “card counter”, the novel methods of card counter are always based on the mathematical process of Thorp. He is also regarded as one of the creators of the first laptop which he developed with Claude Shannon in the Sixties. Thorp received its Ph.D. of the University of California, Los Angeles in 1958, and worked with M.I.T. of 1959 to 1961. He was professor of mathematics of 1965 to 1977 and professor of mathematics and finances of 1977 to 1982 at Irvine CPU.
