Edward Dmytryk

Edward Dmytryk is an American realizer born the September 4th 1908 with Grand Forks, Colombia-British (Canada), deceased on July 1st 1999 with Encino (California).

Biography

Edward Dmytryk is born in Canada, of relative Ukrainians. He is engaged in 1923 by the Paramount like dispach rider, then he becomes assembler chief. He carries out its first medium-length film, The Hawk , in 1935.

Sympathizer of the American political left, it carries out in 1943 the Children of Hitler , a thriller in the shape of violent one indictment against the Fascism which is interdict in France besides. He adheres to the American Communist party during one year, of 1946 to 1947. Its convictions are worth to him to appear among the " Ten of Hollywood " convened by the senator Joseph MacCarthy, and to be condemned to one year of prison and 1000 dollars of fine. It is exiled in Great Britain in 1949 but returns finally at the United States, two years after, and purges its sorrow.

To free itself from the suspicions which weigh on him, and yielding to the pressure, it will be brought to denounce, like Elia Kazan, certain Communists and left sympathizers of which one of his/her friends scenario writers, Adrian Scott, with which it however lengthily collaborated for RKO ( Crossfires ). This event of course causes an outcry in the audio-visual medium and the public opinion. It undoubtedly marks a major turning in the tormented work of Edward Dmytryk; its ambivalent characters, sometimes To border line ( the Man with the mounting , the Juggler ), between cruelty and repentance, make its trademark.

The reception made with its films is reserved. Some of them will obtain a great success ( the Man with the gold Colts ) or a resounding failure ( the Ball of cursed the ). The fact is that he will never manage to separate his sulfurous reputation. Its last films disappoint the critic who generally considers it - and perhaps wrongfully - as a technician certainly talenteux but simple development of brilliances interpreters.

At the end of its life, he teaches with the Université of Texas to Austin and with the the University of California of the South. This very discussed scenario writer dies out in 1999 in Encino, close to Los Angeles, in California.
