Education as a Democratic republic of Congo

The education system Congolese (Democratic republic of Congo) is managed by three ministries: the Ministry for Primary school education, Secondary and Professional (MEPSP), the Ministry for Higher education and Academic (MESU) and the Ministry for the Social Affairs (FARMHOUSE).

History

Teaching with the Belgian Congo was similar to the official teaching of Belgium. The first six years are called " primaires" (6-12 years). The cycle " secondaire" is divided into twice three years. The first 3 years are known as " inférieures" three others " supérieures". The secondary cycle offers, at the time, three orientations, namely: traditional humanities (Greek, Latin, mathematical), humanities known as " modernes" (techniques, scientists, commercial) and humanities " professionnelles" or " familiales". A diploma sanctions the end of each three years cycle. The six years term secondary offers the choice to the studies known as " supérieures" (nonuniversity teaching - between 2 and 4 years) or " universitaires" (2 years of candidature, three and more years of license, followed by a doctorate). There is no baccalaureat. This one is sometimes compensated by an examination of admission relating to the capacity to undertake the selected studies.

In spite of the fact that the public finance of education crumbled as of 1986, the Congolese education system continued to develop, and this thanks to the direct financing of the households.

In 2001/2002, the country counted close to 19  100 elementary schools with 159  000 Teacher S for more than 5,47 million pupils and to 8  000 secondary schools with 108  000 teachers for 1,6 million pupils. The same year, higher education counted close 326 establishments for 200  000 students.

The rate of schooling is of 76% in rural urban environment and 48% in mediums.

Levels of teaching (cycles)

There exist all the levels of teaching as a Democratic republic of Congo.
  • Primary schools and secondary:

    • Certificate of Primary Studies (STOCK): 6 years of elementary school
    • Diploma of State: 6 years of secondary school (humanities).
  • Higher education and research:

    • Graduat : 3 years of university
    • License: 2 years of university after Graduat
    • DEA: 2 years with the University of Kinshasa (after certain numbers of criteria)
    • Defense of thesis of Doctorate

For more legibility near the French-speaking readers of Africa and the Caribbean (exits of the old French colonies) and of the French readers, if one makes a parallel with the denominations of the French education system, equivalences would arise as follows:

  • Diploma of State (Graduate of State): is equivalent to the Baccalaureat. It is in fact the equivalent in France of the baccalaureat. It sanctions six years of studies of second degree. After having obtained the Certificate Of Primary Studies (STOCK) and to be successively last by the College and the College.

  • the Diploma of Graduat (Graduated): is equivalent to the DEUG or BTS (though that for Congo-Kinshasa, it takes three years to obtain it instead of two years for the DEUG which does not exist any more and the BTS in France). It is a diploma which sanctions the first three years of academic works or higher. The graduat obtained in an University is with technical orientation and lasts three year. Its technical orientation makes it possible to the holder of this diploma to have a body of knowledge specialized and concrete to seek an employment and to be directly operational. In that, it is equivalent to a BTS. Whereas the same diploma at the university corresponds to e.g. DEUG with which one cannot claim yet to have a precise specialization, because at this stage the courses at the university do not offer yet a body of enough compact knowledge to be regarded as a speciality.
  • the Diploma of License (Laid off): who was the equivalent of the Control in France is always the equivalent of Control 1 pennies the new denomination of the protocol of Bologna. It is the diploma which sanctions 5 years of academic works i.e. three years of Graduat, plus two years of licenses (1st and 2nd).

It should be stressed that in Congo-Kinshasa, the duration of the total university cycle retained by the national minister of education is still five years without counting that certain dies have one year preparatory preliminary.

In spite of multiple reforms, higher education still remains on - in certain things - the diagram inherited the Belgium. On a purely illustrative basis, although there are changes, the titles in the university and higher teaching staff remained identical: Professor (ordinary, visitor, associate, highly skilled), chief of work, assistant of first mandate and second mandate, Vice-chancellor (of the university), senior (of falculté) and Managing director (of the Institute of higher learning).
