History

Origin of the name

Perhaps Kintzheim comes from the Germanic name König, king and of heim, village. Towards 774, the village of Kintzheim is known under the name of Quningishaim then into 881 Chuniggesheim. The name means " then; the habitat of the roi". The Germanic suffix " heim " was added to the raised Gallic word cuno meaning or " hill " , or with a word of Latin origin known indicating a cone or " the point of a helmet ". These two terms come from the paléo-European root Kun, evoking a " occlusion in the shape of point ". One calls the inhabitants of this commune Schnoke (mosquito), Storche (stork) or Weidseck (fodder bags).

A mérovingien field

Mentioned as of the VIIIe century the village is then the seat of a royal vast domain mérovingien. The territory and the forest of Kintzheim made parties of the field of the royal tax department of Childéric II at the time of the Wulfoald mayor (or Vulfoald). This last defendant of treason by Pépin the Brief will be condemned to died to have plotted against him. On intervention of the abbot Fulrad it will have the safe life. N the other hand he sees himself obliged to yield part of his goods to Pépin the Brief of which the Abbaye of Saint-Mihiel (Meuse). One of the palates of Charlemagne called " Regia" villa; (Quuningishaim), translated later on into Germanic language " Kunigesheim" was undoubtedly located on the slopes of Kintzheim. Charlemagne often went in the area to drive out in company of the abbot Fulrad his Chapelain. This last founded two priories, one with Lièpvre and the other with Saint Hippolyte. It made gift on September 14th 774 with the Prieuré of Lièpvre, attached to died of the abbot Fulrad to the Abbaye of Saint-Denis, of part of the Forêt of " Quuningishaim" and several other properties belonging to the royal field in the surroundings of Kintzheim with right of pasture and hunting. One year later, crowned King of the Lombards, returning of Italy towards Aachen it comes in the " Palatium Selestatis" , probably on the slopes of Kintzheim, its large plaid of autumn. In 781, Charlemagne grants other grounds, of which the vast ones extended from detached forests of the Fisc of Kintzheim to the Prieuré of Lièpvre. The small son of Charlemagne, the emperor Lothaire Ier offered in reward on February 17th 843 Kunigesheim (Königsheim) to Erchangar, count of Nordgau. The Abbaye of Andlau had contiguous properties with the commune of Lièpvre and located at the bottom of the village on the territory of the commune of Kintzheim. They are the meadows of the old people's home of Sélestat, indicated at the time under the name of Abtissinhurst or Graveloch. It is claimed that they belonged to the court colongères that had the Abbaye of Andlau in Kintzheim. The girl Erchangar, Holy-Richarde, founder of the Abbey of Andlau, wife of Charles the Large will inherit all these goods.

From this time the town of Sélestat fully exerts its rights on the town of Kintzheim. In 1632 the castle of Kintzheim is occupied by the Swedish troops thus causing the ruin of the village. With the Revolution, Kintzheim must face a litigation related to the division of the communal goods. In 1834, the city of Sélestat gives up its rights on Kintzheim after a lawsuit which lasted forty years. The village with is crossed wine trails of Alsace and road of Haut-Koenigsbourg. Icon of the nave of the vault of the monastery of Cantauque (Provence), of which he is the holder.]] According to the historians, Kintzheim had already a parish as well as a church in the year 954. The current church was built between 1844 and 1846 and was dedicated with Saint Martin's day, bishop of Turns. The current church replaced an old building which was in Kintzheim. In 1830 is made the decision to increase the church which did not make it possible any more to accommodate the totality of the parishioners. The old church measured only 13,70 m out of 10,70 with a very small chorus and was surrounded by a cemetery of which there existed still an old side of the wall which remained rather well preserved. It is claimed that it belonged to the royal farm. This wall was leant against two houses along the old cemetery. These two houses were acquired following a procdure of expropriation for the sum of 15000 francs and were demolished to increase the current church. The first reconstruction project of a new church goes back to 1758 and the other of 1791. The project consisted in taking as a starting point what existed in Châtenois, but construction was considered to be too expensive for the commune. The Revolution and the long lawsuit with the city of Sélestat were to delay the construction which was differed. The current church was designed by an architect of Sélestat, Mr. Ringesen for an estimate of 100.000 francs. The new church dédéiée with Saint Martin's day was devoted by Mgr Raess, bishop of Strasbourg on August 2nd 1846. Tables, and statues and added appropriations available progressively. In 1870, a storm and a love at first sight tore off half of the steeple roof of the church. September 5th 1917, the German administration removed two bells and 78 organ pipes to be molten and transformed into weaponry. The bells found close to Frankfurt were restored in 1922. ===Chapelle Saint-Jacques=== ===Chapelle Saint-Wendelin === ===Chapelle of Aigle=== This vault located in the Money Valley (Valley of Lièpvre) is 1 km from Vancelle - station, an appendix of Kintzheim located on [[forest] the] domanial one of Sélestat which depends on the Saint Martin's day parish, on a forest road which goes to Haut-Koenigsbourg. The origin of this vault is probably registered at the beginning of XIXe century. The vault was known at the time under the denomination of " Waldkapelle (vault of wood) and was located in the forest canton Adler (Eagle). One does not know exactly the reason for which this forest canton was baptized thus. Perhaps that one hunter would have cut down one eagle? The legend wants that to this place, carrying went in trimmings. Horse which tractor drew a wood load started to scrape the ground vigorously, emphasizing ground an image of Virgin who was fixed in the hollow of a tree. The place became thus a place of pilgrimage attended by many inhabitants of the area. One tells that during the famous appearances of Virgin close to castle of Frankenbourg, on the commune of Neubois, in the years 1872 - 1880, of the people indicated to have had appearances to this place. These people claimed to have seen the Virgin and of angel the S protecting it pope. Like, during the appearances of Neubois, Kreisdirector of Sélestat orders on December 12th 1873 a monitoring day laborer of the places by organizes. The frequentation of the places increasing of day in day, the police force tried to dissuade people to go to this vault or of the unfavourable rumors circulated against German. The current vault was renovated under the direction of priest of then, Joseph Schahl and of the president of the fabric committee of church of Kintzheim, Ignace Humm. The inauguration of the vault took place Monday of Pentecost, on May 20th 1929. The restoration of vault of eagle was realized thanks to the support of the inhabitants of Kintzheim and Châtenois, especially by members of the " Bengalma". Gifts out of materials were made by companies of Sélestat, Châtenois and Kintzheim. === the three fountains === === the bench Joséphine === It is on the initiative of the prefect of the Low-Rhine, Adrien Lezay-Marnesua which one owes the establishment of the first benches resting places. These benches were to be on the road all half-place (2 km) to allow the wine growers and the hikers to rest. Trees were to be planted near the benches to allow ombrager the places. The financing of work were the responsibility of the communes. In 1853, the successor of the prefect of the Low Rhine takes again the initiative at the time of the marriage of Napoleon III with Eugenie de Montijo. The department of the Low-Rhine proposes to deal with work and the supply of the stones of size for approximately 500 francs. The commune of Kintzheim became autonomous in 1800. This was autefois with the locality " stone-limits; Soj-Gràwe" very close to the old Celtic way, then Roman currently transformed into cycle track, close to Hattenberg. In the years 1970, this stone-limits was removed involuntarily by a person to decorate a property with the surroundings.
