Eduardo Frei Montalva

Eduardo Frei Montalva (born the January 16th 1911 with Santiago of Chile and deceased the January 22nd 1982), is a Chilean Politician Christian-Democrat. He was president of the Chilean republic of 1964 with 1970. His/her oldest son Eduardo Frei Ruiz-Tagle was president of 1994 with 2000. Chilean justice currently suspects Eduardo Frei of being assassinated by the DINED, thesis supported inter alia by testimonys coming from the old agent of the CIA and on Michael Townley DINED.

Biography

He is the son of Eduardo Frei Schiling, born in Austria, arrived at the Chile at the 24 years age. In 1919, it goes to the Seminario Conciliar of Santiago , then with the Instituto de Humanidades Luis Campino of Iglesia Católica . He studies the right to the catholic pontifical Université of Chile thanks to a purse. He begins his political career in 1929 with the ANEC ( Asociasión Naciónal de Estudiantes Católicos ). He becomes lawyer in 1933, thanks to his thesis possible Régimen asalariado known there abolición . In Iquique, he is director of the newspaper El Tarapacá . During its youth it adheres to Partido conservador. Many times elected senator, it loses the presidential elections of 1958. In 1964, it is represented under the banner of the Christian Democrat, and is elected thanks to youth and its humanistic ideas. Its program Revolución in Libertad aimed at a structural reform of the country through the creation of co-operatives and new social organizations as the assistance with the neighbors and the mothers. He wanted to improve the economic state of the poorest countries while helping.

Frei announces to want to reduce the inequalities and to modernize the economy, thanks to a land reform, a support with industry and the promotion of exports. It is supported by the the United States which give him an economic assistance of 144 million dollars per annum. The great landowners oppose the land reform, and when the government endeavors to mitigate the effects of them, they are the rural organizations and the left who make pressure on the government. In parallel, the intervention of the State in the economy increases in a substantial way, upsetting Chilean employers. The line starts to withdraw its support with the Christian-Democrat. The government courts the disadvantaged social categories then, causing an avalanche of requests which it is not able to satisfy. Thus after having succeeds in controlling inflation the first two years of its mandate, Frei must be solved to see it increasing by 21,9% in 1967 with 34,9% in 1970. The number of strikes passes from 564 in 1964 to 1819 in 1970.
