Biography
Resulting from an rural environment, Eduard Tubin was born in Torila, a village close to Kallaste, on the edges of the lake Peipsi in Estonia. His/her parents (his father exerted the trades of tailor and fisherman) were both music lovers, and Eduard revealed a musical talent early. It made musical studies with Tartu where it directed the orchestra (the most important formation musical after the theater of Tallinn), then travelled in Europe between the two wars. It met in particular Zoltán Kodály and Béla Bartók which encouraged it. On the model of the first, it was interested highly in the folk music of its country.
In 1940, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet troops and after a few years of cohabitation, Tubin flees in Sweden with his Erika wife and her two sons, in September 1944.
It worked there until its death, carrying out in this country the major part of its work. It composed for the philharmonic orchestra of Stockholm and this same city operated it. It also made there an important research task for the rehabilitation of works baroques. Swedish citizen in 1961, it renewed contact with his native land as of 1965. Its meeting with the Estonian leader Neeme Järvi ensured the world diffusion of its orchestral work. He becomes member of the royal academy of music of Sweden.
