Edouard Servant

Edouard Servant (born in 1876 and deceased in 1929). is a Artiste Suisse.

It is characterized by its spirit of independence and its originality, in painting as in engraving. It falls under the line of Ferdinand Hodler, max Buri, Giovanni Giacometti and Giovanni Segantini.

Servant lived of his art, which at the time did not go from oneself. Its introspection through the self-portrait, this in the duration and the approach of the figure by the evocation of people of modest means and old men, still humanizes his step. Voyages in France, in Germany, Italy - it brings back Chioggia and of Rome of the transcriptions which metamorphose places with picturesque guaranteed - contribute to enrich its course. The drawing underlies each composition. It is the screen of the account and its Architecture. The artist also expresses himself through the pastel, the Aquarelle or oils it, without speaking about the etching which will be worth to him to be essential like one of the uncontested Masters of Swiss engraving.

Sure of his talent, the artist will not have ceased organizing, setting up, building. By the audacity of its framings, privileging for example “selected pieces” of nature, he always seeks to solve a plastic equation, whatever the proposal. Progressively of his evolution, Edouard Vallet acquires an eminently personal style, guaranteeing a real originality to him.

Its route is relatively short, but fertile - Edouard Vallet has fifty-three years when he dies.

The reasoned catalog of the painted work whose authors are Bernard Wyder and Jacques Dominique Rouiller has just appeared with the Editions Patrick Cramer (Geneva) with, on this occasion, an exposure presenting of paintings, engravings and drawings. It should be added that this reference book counts 640 pages, with nearly 900 illustrations mainly colors and that the texts are in French, German and English.

An important retrospective took place, from November 17th, 2006 to March 4th, 2007, the Fondation Pierre Gianadda with Martigny, in the Valais in Suisse, nearly 46.000 visitors came to admire the whole of exposed works, paintings, engravings, drawings, pastels and posters, is more than 160 works presented. Moreover, the foundation also accommodated some paintings of Marguerite Servant-Gilliard, first wife of the painter, died in 1918.

A film was also carried out on this occasion and, naturally, was presented within the framework of the exposure.

This event was very largely evoked through more than 200 interventions in the various Swiss and foreign media.
