Invited to pronounce on the sorrow to inflict with Louis XVI: “ I do not dare to believe, says it, that life or death of a man depends safety on a State. The political considerations disappear in front of people which want freedom or death. I say it to regret, Louis undoubtedly can expier his fixed prices only on the échafaudj, the legislators philanthropists do not soil the Code of a nation by the establishment of the capital punishment; but for a tyrant, if it did not exist, it would have to be invented. I declare that whoever does not think as Caton is not worthy to be republican. I condemn Louis to the capital punishment, and I ask that it undergo it in the twenty-four hours.

Sent on mission to the Armed with the Rhine then in the month of May 1793, as police chief with that of the the Ardennes it is shown there without pity, cleaning the staffs of noble and taxing the rich person.

Of return to Bet S, in the month of frimaire year II, and accommodated with favor by the Jacobins, some successes of platform mislaid it until making hear words, which, later, were often reproached to him: “ II is necessary, says it one day, that France launches on vessels the peat of the enemies of humanity, and that the national lightning absorbs them in the pit of the seas.

Envoy, 9 nivôse, with the Armed with the Eastern Pyrenees: it gives there order with the assistance of Dugommier and of his/her conventional colleague Pierre-Pleasant of Soubrany, it sends in an unjust way the general Aoust to appear before the revolutionary Tribunal, which perishes on the scaffold.

Recalled at the beginning of year III, and named member of the Military committee of Convention, it was charged, as rapporteur, with supporting important proposals, and the talent with which it discharged this task makes it possible to believe that it would have been ready to become a skilful administrator.

Adopt a new first name, that of “Cumin” which it finds in the republican calendar.

After the death of Maximilien de Robespierre on Thermidor 10 Year II (July 28th 1794), it returns to Paris. Jean-Baptiste Carrier is attacked with Convention, Edouard Jean-Baptiste Milhaud takes his defense and he is the only deputy to be voted against his committal for trial.

Under the Directory

The reaction thermidorienne having taken a character of persecution and revenge, its arrest, proposed by Girardin (of the Aude), had been marked if it had not been defended by his colleagues of the Military committee. Milhaud, that the Constitution of year III excluded from the national representation, because of her age (it was not 30 years old), and who, according to unquestionable documents, had been named major to the 20th hunters the July 22nd 1793, took again service, the 5 nivôse year IV, as chief of brigade of the 5th dragons, employee with the Armée with Italy. In 1795, after the separation of the Convention thermidorienne, Edouard Jean-Baptiste Milhaud reinstates the army, it is distinguished with the Armée with Italy.

The following day, with the Battle of Bassano, it charged the enemy rear-guard with 200 dragons, collapsed a battalion of the regiment of Wurmser, inserted a Hungarian battalion, then, being seized the large Austrian artillery park, composed of 40 parts of gun and 200 boxes, it made be useful by its dragons 4 of these parts against an enemy division which advanced to remove its conquest to him. With the Combat of Saint-Michel, in the throats of the the Tyrol, it accepted a wound with the head.

The following year, while it fought thus for the defense and the glory of the fatherland, Harmand, appointed Meuse with the Conseil of Old the, reconsidered the charges which had been carried against him after Thermidor 9, and required a severe examination of its mission in the departments of the Haut-Rhin and the the Low-Rhine; in spite of the efforts of the thermidoriens, this proposal was again isolated by a simple day order.

It took an active share with the events of 18 and 19 brumaire year VIII, not as commander the troops sent to the Luxembourg to hold to with it captive the members of the Directoire, but, the 18, as chief of staff of Lannes, with the Palais of Tileries, and, 19, like fulfilling near Murat the same functions with Saint-Cloud.

Under the Consulate and the First Empire

Named Brigadier general the January 5th 1800, and employed with the Armed with England, it had, the 11 ventôse, the command of the 8th military division (Vaucluse), was sent to the Armée with the South, the 5 floréal year IX, and in the Italian République the 1st vendémiaire year XI. Attached to the body of prince Murat, it seized Lintz, the 10 brumaire year XIV, after a rather sharp engagement, beat the enemy the following day at the village of Aster, collapsed it, continued it, and made him 200 prisoners. The 23, making the avant-garde of the marshal Davout, it pushed the enemy on the road of Braunn until Wolfkersdorf, made 600 prisoners and seized a many artillery.

The October 28th 1806, it forced the 6.000 men of the body of the prince Hohenlohe to capitulate, and was promoted with the Major general rank of the December 30th of the same year. In 1807, it was with Eylau and Creutzbourg.

Sent in Spain in 1808, it dispersed, the November 19th, a battalion of students close to Valverde, entered, the 23, in Palencia, beat, the December 22nd, the band of the Empecinado and dispersed the insurrectionary junta of Molina d' Aragon.

The March 28th 1809, the shortly after the Combat of Ciudad-Réal, where the general Sébastiani demolished 15.000 Spaniards who kept the processions of the Sierra-Morena, Milhaud continued the runaways in the direction of Asmagro and made them test a considerable loss. The November 18th according to, attacked with Ocana by before-gardede the Spanish army, it pushed back it vigorously, and with the battle of this name, with the head of the one of the brigades of its division, it obliged an enemy column to return its weapons and to deliver any sound-artillery to him. December 4th, it reached with Huerès, and dispersed the guerillas of Empecinado again.

In 1810, ordering the avant-garde of the 4th body, it sabred, the February 4th, between Anteguerra and Malaga, a body of considerable infantry, and this action, mentioned with praises in the report/ratio of the Sébastiani general to the marshal Soult, was worth in Milhaud the title of large Officer of the Legion of Honor that Napoleon i conferred the June 22nd to him according to. It had already created it Count of the Empire some time before.

Put of availability the November 17th 1811, it accepted the June 10th 1812, the command of the 25e military division.

Called, the July 6th according to with the Large army of Russia, it delivered, the October 10th 1813, in the Plaine of Zeitz, one of the most beautiful combat of cavalry whose mention the Annales French soldiers make, and in which it entirely destroyed the regiments of Austrian dragons of Latour and Hohenzollern, as well as the light horsemen of Kaiser.

The Emperor, on the report/ratio which was addressed to him of this business, placed under the orders of Milhaud the 5th body (a) of cavalry, with the head of which this one beat, the December 24th, with Holy-Cross, close to Colmar, the body of the partisans of the Austrian general Scheibler, and cut in parts, the January 27th 1814, with Saint-Dizier, the division of cavalry of the general Landskoy. He was distinguished with the engagements from Marmont and Valjouan, and drove out, of the village of Villars, the light cavalry of the Prince de Wurtemberg.

Obliged to withdraw itself, the following day, in front of the body of Giulay, it operated its retirement in good order on Fontette, where it joined the Duc of Tarente, and led the remains of its body in the department of the Seine-Lower . It was of Rouen that, the April 8th, adhering, as well on its behalf as in that of his/her comrades in arms, with the acts of the Senate, it wrote to the president of the provisional government:

We want, for the happiness of France, a strong and liberal constitution, and, in our sovereign, the heart of Henri IV.

Fact Knight of Saint-Louis, on June 1st, and the same general inspector day of the 15th military division, it put, nevertheless, the most generous eagerness, with the March 20th 1815, to offer its services to the Emperor, who entrusted to him the command of a body of cuirassiers, which, guided by him, covered glory with the battles of Fleurus and Waterloo (see the load of the cuirassiers in the Poor wretches, volume II, of Victor Hugo). However one takes place to be astonished that the Milhaud general was, after the Bataille by the mount Midsummer's Day, one of the first general officers and the first to perhaps offer his services to Louis XVIII.

We will add that, proscribed like regicide by the law of the January 12th 1816, and striped control of the Legion of honor the March 2nd of the same year, it obtained an indefinite deferment and was reinstated in the Order the December 29th 1817.

Under Louis-Philippe Ier

In 1830, Edouard Jean-Baptiste Milhaud joins with Louis-Philippe Ier. Placed within the framework of reserve the February 7th 1831, admitted with the treatment of reform, like not having time sufficient for the liquidation of its retirement, the lieutenant-general count Milhaud died in Aurillac the January 8th 1833.

Its name is registered on the Triumphal arch of the Star, west coast.
