Edouard Gagnon

Edouard Gagnon (born the January 15th 1918 with Port-Daniel and dead the August 25th 2007 with Montreal, is a man of the church and Professor Québécois.

He was professor of Théologie of 1945 with 1954. Bishop of Saint-Paul in Alberta of 1969 with 1972 then vice-chancellor of the pontifical College of Rome of 1972 with 1985. It had before been Provincial of the Sulpicien S in Latin America and with the Japan.

Under the pontificate of Paul VI, it emitted a report/ratio on the internal disorders of the Roman Curie. Promoted cardinal in 1985 by Jean-Paul II, he was president of the pontifical Conseil for the family until in 1990 and chair pontifical committee for the international congresses eucharistic.

In the years 1980, it had been named mediator between Marcel Lefebvre and the Vatican. It was famous for its doctrinal orthodoxy and its interest for the tradition connected with the church. It supported the Fraternité Saint-Pierre at the time of his creation.

Mgr Gagnon was the first Canadian to be reached if high ranking in the catholic hierarchy. He was also postulator of the cause in canonization of Marguerite Bourgeoys. In 2004, he convinced the pope Jean-Paul II to hold the congress eucharistic of 2008 in Quebec.

At the time of its death, a homage was paid to him by the pope Benoît XVI and the minister Monique Gagnon-Tremblay. The cardinal Marc Ouellet pronounced the Homélie his funeral with the Basilique Notre-Dame of Montreal.
