Edouard Charton
Edouard Charton is a publicity agent (publication director) and politician French, born with Sens (Yonne) the May 11th 1807 and died in Versailles the February 27th 1890.
Biography
- 1807 . Birth with Sens on May 11th.
- 1827 . Receipt lawyer, registered voter at the bar of Paris, it does not follow this occupation for which it seems to have had a true aversion and continues to collaborate, as at the time of its studies to the bulletins of two companies, the Company for the elementary Instruction and the Company of Christian Morals. It is within these philanthropic companies that it includes/understands the importance of the instruction, discovers the societies' problems and acquires convictions that it will preserve all its life.
- 1829 . It joined the rows of the Saint-Simonians, and after a passage to the drafting of the newspaper the Earth , become in 1830 the Newspaper of the doctrines of Saint-Simon , under the direction of Michel Chevalier, it traverses Brittany and the Vendée to preach the ideas saint-simoniennes.
- 1831 . At the time of the schism which sees the departure of the republican Saint-Simonians, it breaks with Prosper Enfantin like his friends Hippolyte Carnot and Jean Reynaud.
- 1833 . It begins with the picturesque Store , illustrated weekly magazine launched in by the printer Lachevardière Saint-Simonian on the model of the " Penny Magazine" English, a profitable career of publication director. Untiring director of this first popular magazine illustrated until 1888, it succeeds in mobilizing for the cause of the instruction and the useful entertainment not only his friends so erudite Saint-Simonians but and writers of reputation. During more than fifty years, the articles are not signed, but one knows for example that George Sand sometimes contributed to it or that Camille Flammarion made there its beginnings of popularizer in 1864, at the 22 years age. Persuaded that the illustration is essential for comprehension and approval it is at the origin of the revival of engraving on wood in France and supported the beginnings of career of several illustrators of reputation.
- 1843 . Edouard Charton is in the beginning, with Joanne, Paulin and Dubochet, of the launching of the Illustration, another weekly magazine with success, of which it leaves the direction quickly.
- 1848 . With the fall of Louis Philippe in February, it is called with the general secretary of the Ministry for the State education by his friend Hippolyte Carnot, Minister for the provisional government. It becomes appointed of Yonne then Conseiller State. : 1851 . He protests against the coup d'etat of December 2nd, before dislocating his functions. Its attitude at the time of these events is reported by Victor Hugo in Histoire of a crime . Under the Second Empire, Charton will arise without success like candidate of the democratic opposition in Sens, in 1857 and 1863.
- 1853-1855 . After having made appear four volumes of the old and modern Travellers , it is interested in the accounts of the contemporary travellers and lance the review the Round the world tour which marks its beginnings at Hachette.
- 1859 . It publishes, with the collaboration of Henri Bordier, a illustrated French history , greeted in eulogistic terms for the choice of its illustrations in the bulletin of the library of the École of the Charters.
- 1863 . It settles with Versailles.
- 1864 . It founds a popular library there. It launches the Library of the Wonders, collection of small popularizing works. There too Charton can convince to make sure the contest of the best specialists (“special men').
- 1867 . Corresponding member of the institute of France.
- 1870 . The fall of the Empire marks its return to the policy. September 6th, it is named prefect of Seine-et-Oise by the government of national defense.
- 1871 . Republican elected official of the Yonne in February, it sits at the National Assembly.
- 1876 .
- *Il represents (without interruption, until its death in 1890) its department of origin to the Senate. Its interventions in the assemblies all are marked of the preoccupation with a promotion of the people by education and the instruction. He stresses the importance of artistic teaching and defends the idea of a cultural policy. He takes part in the creation of the museum of ethnography of the Trocadéro, ancestor of the Museum of the man.
- *Il is elected with the Academy of Science morals and political in the vacant place left by the death of Auguste Casimir-Perier.
- 1888 . The town of Direction gives its name to the street where its native house is located.
- 1890 . Death in Versailles on February 27th.
