Edouard Baldus
Edouard Denis Baldus (1813 - 1889), was a photographer, born German with Grunebach in Prussia, naturalized French in 1856.
Its life
Painter of formation, Edouard Baldus settles with Paris in 1838, after a voyage to the United States, to improve his painting and exposes to the living rooms of 1847, 1848 and 1851.He undoubtedly approaches photography about 1848. He chooses then a career of Photographe primarily turned towards the sight of architecture.
He photographs whole France, mainly his monuments and railway work of the time. He carries out also the first reports, as in 1856, during the floods of the the Rhone.
- 1851 : he achieves a heliographic Mission on behalf of the Commission of the Historic buildings in Burgundy, in the Dauphiné and the South. Anxious to record an overall picture of each building, it develops a system sophisticated assemblies the negative ones. Recognized for its talent, it receives many orders during all this decade.
- 1852 : it takes part in a photographic work, the towns of France ,
- 1853: it again goes in the South in 1853.
- 1854: he travels in Auvergne.
- 1855 : at the request of the baron James de Rothschild, it commemorates in a sumptuous album the route in railroad borrowed by the Reine Victoria, of Boulogne to Paris, to go to the World Fair.
- 1856 : it carries out on order of the Art schools a report on the floods devastators of the the Rhone, with Lyon, Avignon and Tarascon. It is naturalized French this same year.
- Between 1855 and 1858: it photographs the construction of new the Louvre (Paris).
- 1857 : he becomes member of the French company of photography
- 1859: Baldus carries out a new album in 1859 at the time of the prolongation of the railway line between Marseilles and Toulon.
- Years 1860: as from 1860, he works primarily in smaller formats.
- 1875 : he gathers the majority of his photographs, withdrawn in process engraving, in his work the principal monuments of France .
He left a great number of negative from which the majority are still accessible.
Collections
The Photographic archives (Media library of architecture and the inheritance) preserve many negative paper and negative glass at collodion dating for the majority from second half of the years 1850 and the years 1860.
