Edmund White

Edmund Valentine White III , born on January 13rd 1940 with Cincinnati (Ohio), is a Romancier, Biographe and Critique American arts person.

Biography

He grows with Chicago, passes by a prestigious school (the Cranbook Academy ) then studies at the University of the Michigan. He works as journalist, while starting to write.

He makes known himself by criticism as of his first novels, Oublier Helena (1973) and Nocturnes for the king of Naples , thanks to his experimental writing which is worth to him the praises of Vladimir Nabokov. Night for the king of Naples (1978), in particular, combines to narration with the second anybody, homosexual love and mythical references .

It also publishes The Joy off Gay Sex (with Charles Silverstein, 1977) and the States of the desire: voyages as a gay America (1980), which reveal its gay militancy after the riots of Stonewall.

But it is especially its autobiographical trilogy which is worth success to him: young American (1982) described the end of childhood with acuity and an engraved writing that encense Susan Sontag. Follow Tenderness on the skin (1988) or the route of a gay young man at the end of the years 1960, and the Symphony of the good-byes (1997), melancholic person reduced with the memory of the victims of the AIDS. It had already tackled the subject in the news of the Splinter (1988) with Adam March-Jones. It is itself Séropositif since a score of years. He lived in France of 1983 to 1990, and published biographies of Jean Genet and Marcel Proust. the married Man (2000) comes to make trilogy a tetralogy.

Its literary success opened the doors of the universities to him, where he taught the homosexual literature and the writing: Yale, Columbia, John Hopkins… the Library which burns gathers several of its critical texts, in particular on authors of its generation: David Leavitt, Andrew Holleran, Robert Ferro… It currently teaches the writing of Fiction to Princeton. It received the price of the festival of Deauville in 2000 for the whole of its work.
