The baron Edmond James of Rothschild is a philanthropist and French collector born with Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine) the August 19th 1845 and died in Boulogne-Billancourt (Hauts-de-Seine) the November 2nd 1934.

Biography

Young person wire of the baron James de Rothschild, founder of the branch of Paris, it is useful in the National guard during the War of 1870. it marries in 1877 his cousin Adelheid de Rothschild (Adelaide) (1853 - 1935), of the branch of Naples (V. Famille Rothschild). They will have three children:

Edmond de Rothschild did not take an active share with the development of the house of family bank. He was before a whole collector and a patron.

Friend of Ernest Hébert, Jean-Jacques Henner, Aime Morot, Eugene Guillaume and Leon Bonnat, it joins together a famous collection of gold boxes and miniatures (today with Waddesdon Manor, Great Britain). Member of the Council of the museums, giver of the Museum of Louvre, it made him gift of the famous treasure of silverware of 110 parts found with Boscoréale, close to Pompéi (1895). He also made generous gifts with certain museums of province.

With his brother Gustave, it financed the Millet excavations, Didymes, Tralles and Magnésie, carried out in 1873 by the Rayet archeologist, of which they offered the product to the Musée of Louvre. It also financed the excavations of Charles-Simon Clermont-Ganneau in Egypt, of Eustace de Lorey in Syria and of Raymond Weyl in Palestine.

With its death, its heirs made gift with the Musée of Louvre of a whole of 3  000 drawings of the 18th century and 43  000 engravings. It also offered a rare whole of manuscripts and autographs to the National library. Its generosity was worth to him to be elected free member of the Académie of the Art schools to the armchair of Henri Bouchot (1906).

Member of the Company of the friends of sciences, it contributed to the creation of the physicochemical Institut of biology (1927), of the Institute Henri Poincaré and the House of the Institute of France with London (1919). He also financed the Casa of Velázquez to Madrid.

Engagement Zionist

Starting from 1882, it started to buy ground in Palestine and became one of the most active supports of the Sionisme, financing the first establishment with Rishon LeZion. It is one of the key men of the success of the first Aliyah Zionist. In 1899, it will transfer 25  000 hectares of Palestinian arable lands, as well as the colonies which were there, with the Jewish Colonization Association, but continued to support it financially.

Contrary to other Rothschild, it attached a great importance to this company and made five voyages in Palestine (May 1887, spring 1893, February 1899, February 1914, May 1925) to follow there in a paternalist way the development of its “colonies”.

It helped the Jews of Russia driven out by the Pogrom S to create vineyards around the Carmel mount but failed to develop, as in Grasse, the industry of the perfume.

In 1924, it created Palestine Jewish Colonization Association (PICA), which acquired more than 500 km ² (50  000 hectares) of ground.

It is estimated that he spent more than 50 million dollars in these companies.

It ends up separating from the policy of construction of a State recommended by the Jewish Agency by defending another approach, based on the industrialization and the respect of the Arab populations.

In April 1954, its skin and that of his wife were exhumed cemetery of the Father-Lachaise and were transported in Israel on a military frigate. With Haïfa, the ship was greeted by sirens and blows of gun. National funeral took place during which the former Prime Minister David Ben Gourion lute the funeral praise. Edmond de Rothschild and his wife were buried in Ramat Hanadiv Memorial Gardens.

Residences

Edmond de Rothschild lived a private mansion 41, Rue of the Suburb-Saint-Honore (today: residence of the ambassador of the United States), built in 1836 by Louis Visconti for the Baroness of Pontalba and acquired in 1876. It almost entirely made it rebuild by Felix Langlais. It made there go up woodworks coming from the hotel Samuel Bernard, located 46 Rue of the Vat, as well as part of the vast whole of woodworks coming from the hotel Peyrenc de Moras (today Musée Rodin) and acquired by Rothschild.

With Boulogne-Billancourt, it had the castle built for his father. It also had the Château of Armainvilliers (Seine-et-Marne), built 1880 with 1900 in the Anglo-Norman style by Felix Langlais and Emile Ulmann on a ground acquired in 1877 of the duke of Rochefoucauld-Doudeauville. The park, due to Laîné, claimed immense excavation work and of foothills.
