Edmond Machtens

Edmond Machtens was a socialist Politician , minister and burgomaster of the commune of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean in Belgium between 1939 and 1978. A boulevard, a public garden, and a football stadium bear its name in the commune.

It is in 1933, that Edmond Machtens begins his political career for the first time within the town council of the commune. It had been elected to advise communal substitute, and it is following the resignation of the effective adviser Gielis that it at the time of sitting. October 16th, 1938, he is re-elected and the town council indicates it to sit like first alderman. January 26th, 1939, a royal decree appoints it burgomaster of Molenbeek.

The second world war follows, and Edmond Machtens takes an active part very in the Résistance against the occupant Nazi, returning a very strong reception in his commune to him after this war. Machtens obtains more than 6000 votes preferably to the communal elections of 1946.

Personal friend of the contractor Jean-Baptiste the Lock officer of the company the Lock, Edmond Machtens had much influence apart from Molenbeek, more particularly on the level of the area. What wanted to say that many building sites of Brussels were allotted to this company.
