Edmond Leburton , politician Belgian, was born in Lantremange, close to Waremme (Province of Liege), the April 18th 1915 and deceased the June 18th 1997. He was laid off in political sciences and social Université of Liege.
In 1946, it became appointed Socialiste with the Chambre of the representatives for the district of Huy - Waremme. He was Minister for the Public health and the Family, of 1954 with 1958, minister for the social Welfare, 1961 with 1965 and minister-vice-president of the council in charge of the coordination of the policy of the infrastructure, of 1965 with 1966. After the death of Joseph Merlot, in 1969, it succeeded to him as a Minister for the Economic affairs. Edmond Leburton resigned as a minister when he was elected president of the Belgian Socialist party (1971 - 1973).
He was Prime Minister of January 26th 1973 at April 25th 1974. Its tripartite government, which ambitionnait to finalize the reform of the Constitution (formation of the areas), was thwarted by the strikes of the Docker S and the schoolboys against the reform of the army, the demonstrations against the Avortement, the reform of the school pact, the crisis of oil and finally, the Ibramco business. This one was decisive for the fall of the government.
Edmond Leburton was named minister of state in 1971. June 7th 1977, it was elected president of the Room of representatives, function which it assumed until in 1981. Edmond Leburton was the last Wallon to exercise the mandate of Prime Minister.
The Encyclopedia of the Walloon Movement in its Volume III, pp. 927-929 devotes an important note to him. Edmond Leburton was present at the Walloon National congress of 1945 and lined up in the camp of the defenders of the federalism to the Congress of the Walloon Socialists of 1959, then its support for the Walloon Movement becomes discrete and it becomes an adversary of the Walloon Popular movement then federalism and its passage to the head of the Belgian government signife a crushing argument to the committed reforms in 1970. It is highly criticized there by the Flemings for his absence of knowledge of Dutch. He was the only First Walloon socialist minister .
