Edmond Lahaye

Edmond Lahaye is a Chansonnier and French draftsman born in 1886 with Ay (the Marne), and deceased in 1981 with Antibes (the Alpes-Maritimes).

To the First World War, he is chansonnier in the Montmartrean cabarets and member of the Company of the Humoristes Draftsmen where he entered with the sponsorship of the prestigious caricaturist Francisque Poulbot. He takes part in the living room of the humorists where he is a real success.

Edmond Lahaye was a filled man. Does he did not count any more his friends, “of the friends passing most clearly of their time to go from bar in bar, thus ties the relations in the artistic medium… but how much resist this mode? ” he said by evoking the untimely deaths of Gaston Couté, Juan Gris or Modigliani.

Edmond Lahaye, was wiser to him. He was satisfied with the monthly banquets of the humorists where he met Christmas-Christmas, who charmed his public as soon as he put himself at the piano, Dolgelès and Mac Orlan, which was to release the pencil for the feather later.

Working for the Parisian newspapers “the Morning” and “Ruy Blas” whose pages are regularly illustrated of its drawings, Edmond Lahaye saw comfortably. Artist with the delicate pencil, it crunches especially pretty the frimousses the Parisian ones.

The Great War arrives. Mobilized, it is sent four years to the face where it is wounded three times. After the war, it Marie with a Parisian pianist, Yvonne Delevoye. They leave the capital to be installed on the Riviera, initially with Gulf-Juan (Vallauris) then with Antibes. In 1920, it is reconverted into the decoration of vases, dishes, ceramics plates.

Parallel to this activity, it crunches caricatures of people famous and written for regional reviews. Its articles report the small events of the time and the area: fashion of the shirts pyjamas, sumptuous dinners in the de luxe hotels, festivals with the American artists on vacation…

Its drawings naturally bring it to publicity. It has as customers of the hotels, of the chocolate manufacturers, the crested stores. In spite of an overloaded timetable, it takes time to write humorous songs which it interprets in several mythical places of the Coast. With his Yvonne wife, it animates each Sunday an emission on " Radio-coast of Azur" , where, with its small troop of four people, it presents sketches full with humor. To “the Imagery”, its “workshop-house-shop”, it launches series of postcards which it prints itself. Illustrating Antibes and Juan-the-Pines, Cannes or Nice, they often represent smart, beautiful and rich women. The topicality and the time are crunched with humor. These charts become little by little the most visible part of its artistic activity. After the Second world war, it is sixty years old, it continues to draw, sing and play of the piano.

It will stop only the day before its death, in 1981.
